There is actually no rewriting going on here. Hercules followed/tracked the lion back to his Den in an attempt to slay it. As for the clothes, everyone was sure while Hercules was wearing the lion's skin he was the lion until he said otherwise, and they all believed him. Despite the king being horrified at first and convinced he was the lion.
