Because it IS casting a shadow! The clouds are called "contrails" or condensation trails. The jet exhaust is very hot and moist, while the air up there is very cold and dry. So the exhaust rapidly cools like the steam from your shower on the mirror, forming a cloud that follows the plane.

The suns low angle in the sky and a several thousand foot differential in altitude between the lower contrail and the cloud deck creat the shadow.

You are correct but if you look closely at the one going across I'm sure it's just a break in the clouds because the second stream doesn't have any shadow on it at all but I could be wrong =3

The shadow break is offset towards the vertical line. Both contrails are well below the cirrus clouds you see the shadow on.
