Would you be brave enough to go down this street on Halloween? :)
This is a camera-phone shot of an actual street sign in the town of Bulls, New Zealand. And no, there's not streets named after Dracula in the neighbourhood, though I did check if there were any streets named Venom, Vixen or Mosquito (there weren't) :)

We do celebrate Halloween to a certain extent; it's certainly not on the same scale as it might be in the US or UK. The advertising for crap merchandising starts about a month in advance.
Then, of course, we have Guy Fawkes on November 5, which is even more pointless, I reckon. I don't particularly like it due to the noise. And certain people seem to like letting off fireworks during the graveyard hours (such as 2 AM).

We've got towns called Foxton and Bunnythorpe... and they're not far from Bulls, either
The primary purpose of Bulls is to furnish tourists with god-awful puns - for example, the local police station is labelled "Const-a-bull", shops are labelled "Afford-a-bull" and the local bank branch is "Bank-a-bull".
Apparently the town of Bulls is twinned with... Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK

The "huge-ass ground bugs" are called [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weta]wetas[url], ecologically speaking, they fulfil the role of mice and rats in the native New Zealand ecosystem as until human colonisation there were practically no land-mammals (apart from bats).
Wetas are harmless, but look like a cricket designed by the guy who came up with the xemomorph in "Aliens" :)
I posted an example of the latest weird-assed NZ name story here in the FA foraums, it's worth a giggle :)

(Apologies for the double-post, mucked up the weta link)
