I wrote this story, beginning in 2001, after I first started volunteering with wolves. I had spent my winter vacation in the mountains of Arizona interviewing wolf killers, ranchers, advocates, and federal workers as well as conducting field research and just generally seeing how things were.
The story here is based on actual events. It is my telling of the life of the first wild-born Mexican wolf since they were declared extinct (in the wild in the United States) in about 1977. I visited the area, including the site where the "Angela" character was killed. The howling reflected the number of wolves alive as each event brought new killings and fewer wolves.
I now understand how easy a story it was to tell. I never really had parents, so it was easy to tell the story of a wolf who lost both his parents.
I hope one day to continue the story. The idea was to provide a more realistic perspective of the life of wolves.
Sadly, I doubt I will finish the story in time to save wolves... :(
