As an, um, "experiment" in H.S. chemistry class, I and a lab partner made some nitrogen tri-iodide. After several failed attempts we managed to produce a few grams, which exploded with the barest touch of a mixing rod. It made a lovely plume of dark purple smoke (due mainly to iodine compounds). Ah, good times... :)
