Well, Afrikaans is derrived from Dutch, and I think dutch came from German.
I know a few german words, Guten tag, (Goeie Dag) for example.
I've noticed when they talked they won't say EG they're hungry, it sounded more like "I have hunger", In Afrikaans you'll say something like "I is hungry" if you directly translate
Like I said, I can't understand German if it's written but Germans and Afrikaners can communicate quite fluently in their mother language, we discovered this when we had some German exchange students at our school when I was in school
