For myself is the manga with the best plot till now. One Piece has also a very well thought plot, but more in the adventure ting than in the thriller one of Death Note. Anyway, the ending wasn't random, it was predictable as Ryuk said himself he'd be the one to take Light's soul. But in my opinion, what it would have been better, it would be that it was L who 'caught' Light instead of Mello.
