Considering the show spawned the meme "are they are still on namek?" that's kind of accurate. I think DBZ is one of those things people remember as better than it was because of how it seemed to be one of the first Anime's that was actually readily accessible to the US. Then again, it might simply feel really cliche' because it set so many of them in it's debut.
In any case, you might want to sample a badass shonen 80's anime that is about on par with DBZ and doesn't require you even watch the show in order; if so I'd recommend "Fist of the north-star" (though the accurate title is "hokuto no ken" which sometimes leads to better searches). I will say that it is hyper violent, but they also have the largest quantity of the least sympathetic antagonists I've ever seen so I doubt you'd see it as particularly excessive.

I think another obscure one I really liked was the "devilman" series, But that's because of the spin off with Jun Fudo; she turns into a gigantic muscular hairy demon brute chick and beats up other demon chicks. I haven't watched the main series, but it's probably very similar but with way more guy demons which might be more your speed.
