A more head on shot of this lovely orb weaver.
They really are some of the hairiest spiders outside of the mygalomorphs, if you ask me.

The Rebel has a "Macro setting". It's that little flower under the "creative modes" section or whatever.
I don't use it. I use manual mode.
The macro mode is designed to set up the settings of the shot for macro photography, but it can't actually get you closer than the lens you are using can.

I usually end up using auto 'cuz I can't seem to focus very well with manual- the pix always come out a bit blurred at the edges and it's driving me bananas. I wear glasses and that might be a factor, I dunno. I've seen that little flower dealy- thought it was a guide: it gives a "best distance" number with it- hadn't known it was the macro setting. I'm still learning what this camera can do, obviously, so I hope I don't sound like a complete moron when I moan about wanting to get better shots (never used a real camera before last year, actually, just those little junky ones people take holiday snaps with)... Heh. I do have a telephoto lens from the same company as the camera, but I can't seem to get the same quality you do. The other smaller lens is by a company called Tamron- I'm not sure of the quality of that one.
This is what I get for fooling around with a piece of equipment I know little or nothing about. *Is gonna go dig up the manual and see if that helps at all* Got a tripod for Christmas, maybe that'll help- I can set the the camera for higher speeds or longer exposure and not let my trembly paws screw up the pic (just recently found out about the RAW mode, too)... Thanks for kicking my old coal-burning brain into gear. Heh.

So I figure, and I practice a lot. Got some fun pix from the Rose Bowl Parade yesterday that I'm going to post. No macros, but I got a grand pic of some storks and the SR71 Blackbird... Want good pix, dangit. And it turns out that I have used the "creative modes" on the dial, including the "macro" setting, just didn't know it was called that. But I still can't seem to get the insane amount of detail you manage to. I'm wondering if the camera needs servicing- it's four years old and I suspect it hasn't been cleaned in all that time and I'm noticing that the focusing motor sems a bit sluggish, some days.
One thing that might be a factor is the eye-piece has a wee focus adjustment on it, and being able to do a snap without my glasses may be something I'll try.
Anyway, I'll keep slugging at it, 'cuz I want to do my best at this new art-form (new to me, anyway). Thanks for your suggestions and encouragement! And yes, I'm reading the manual. *chuckles*

I can't use the eye piece without glasses. My eyesight is too poor.
For reference, I use the following lens for macro shots: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/.....ns-Review.aspx

Gonna check that out- thank you! See if i can find one I can afford... And the designation I gave for the freaky aircraft at the Rose Bowl was wrong- it was actually the B-2 Spirit, the plane people call the "stealth bomber". I got it wrong because I'd heard many folks call the Blackbird by the same name, and when someone shouted that the Stealth was in th sky... *shrug* And that thing really is very quiet- for a jet, anyway... Check it out: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1851460/ (The clouds look odd because they're the remnants of some sky-writing other planes had been putting in the air) I lucked out: I usually don't ever manage as clear a shot of something moving that fast...
