Having heard the remake of it, I think for what the song is I like the original more than the remake, but i do agree both are good. :)
The first one makes it feel more like a journey through life, the new one makes it feel more like a celebration with how upbeat it is and how you tie the verses together rather than being a sad song about the things we endure in life, such as finding friends and eventually when our life journey here is done having to leave them behind even though we don't want them to go and how we wish we could bring them back to continue the good times and memories.
