Surprisingly enough what most folk don't know, is that shepherds can actually fight. Maybe not to a crazy extent, but they usually aren't weak! (Gotta fight off wolves and what not)

Yup! The point of this is less to remove any hope of fighting, more putting heroes in their place and making them useful for the mysterious lord of the land. I also wonder how effective a fighter she might be in such a foreign form.

Considering that 'the head honcho' rewritten her entire history... she probably wouldn't even know herself. Though I do wonder what would occur if my paladin were to try her hand... and how far she'd get.

You'd have to ask Arrow to be sure, but I believe that the mental alterations are limited; not a full rewrite but things like making them illiterate, giving them necessary skills for their new form, and restricting their knowledge of their heroic skills. As far as I know they would still retain their memories for the most part.

And if you want to send your paladin through, I'm sure it would be entertaining to see the results. XD

Well, possibly. Its also just that little flavor text of "and they can't help but feel something is off."

Going from world traveling adventurers to simple farm folk isn't exactly a... "something feels off" moment. But whatever works with story more and folk have fun with it, right?

If I understood correctly, the comment about "knowing something was off" was a sarcastic understatement. I could be wrong, but that was my understanding.

it isn't mind alteration. they're acutely aware of what they were before... different body and some of their hero skills are suppressed, but mentally they are the same

Little did our mage know, but his attempt to remove a hero would instead create a long line of heroes and heroines that would wield what came to be known as the Power of the Shepherd.

Even to this day, these mighty collies defend those who are threatened by the powers of evil. Most recently the power is in the paws of Esmerelda Braithwaite of Christchurch, New Zealand.

Yes, the whole thing was a reference to Super Collie.
