Hmmm, alright..
Hey do you remember how the only way to be one of the "Cool Kids" in the nineties and notties was to act like you didn't care about anything at all?
How anything anyone else was fascinated or interested in was boring?
Have you noticed the similarities between hipsters and that subculture?
To explain, hipsters are just the college versions of the middle school and highschool "Cool Kids".
However in their update if you will they have -tried- to appropriate geekyness, by pretending to be interested in certain things. Of course they must make sure that those things aren't interesting to anyone else, that way they can still retain the original tenets of "coolkidism" of not caring about anything anyone else does. This allows them to claim some modicum of "Geekyness" all while preserving their pre-collegiate rules of being "Cool"
The other problem is usually they either have to accept some level of having other people listening/eating/consuming the same media they enjoy. Or take their search for uniqueness and desperate desire to be cooler than everyone else to the extreme thus forcing them to consume the media/food that no one else or an extremely limited population will to ensure that they are the only ones or one of the few who like it.
The only problem is Geekyness is not nearly as maligned anymore, so all hipsters have become is viewed as is fakers and annoying.
So stripes, I am very sure I haven't heard of it. Cause although I enjoy indie artists, and hole in the wall restaurants, I prefer to patronize places and artists for their goodness as opposed to just being unknown or underground.
Ta!
(Just figured I would write out what my guy would say if he actually met Hipster stripes. Sorry for wall of text.)
