When Ley Lines first discovered her talent, she used it to ward off bullies; not really learning or discovering anything beyond the fact that she could get bigger and intimidate those that used to intimidate her. However, it was the manifestation of her mark that drew the interest of Canterlot's School for Gifted Unicorns. She was invited to partake in study - and after sufficient experimentation, she was invited to learn at the academy. It was only after her magical talents had been developed that she was sent out into the world to make this map... and oh, how eager she was to prove herself!

I asked her for permission to write this character - her idea (which I helped brainstorm with her for, mind you) inspired me heavily - and she granted it.
