They where finally there.
They had made it through caves and forests and mountains to reach this place. The Lonely Mountain, that contained the Arkenstone, that would make Thorin the great king of dwarfs!
This was the quest he and his group of fellow dwarfs had come for, to take back what used to be their home and castle.
But they where not the only ones on this journey. They also have a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins with them. Hobbits where very well known by others by their abilities to steal stuff very stealthy, hence why they often during their travel called him by the title of "Burglar".
They where in great need of their "Burglar" because the stone was being guarded (Along with countless of other treasures) by a big dragon called Smaug. Smaug was often dragged to gold and treasuries, and since the dwarfs had been collecting up more golden then what existed in any other part of Middle earth the Dragon had naturally decided to make their castle his new home. With Bilbo's talent for taking things they knew he was the only one that would be able to take the stone without the dragon noticing it.
Many of the dwarfs where very unsure if the small hobbit really would be able to handle the big dragon, but Bilbo assured them that he had "secret trick" that would help him succeed. The secret trick in question was having that the small Hobbit had during his part of the journey found the one ring of power, the most mighty ring of them all.
It had many special powers, but one that Bilbo found very useful is that when putting it on, it could make the wearer of it invisible! And that was just what he needed the most when he entered the treasure chamber, and successfully took the Arkenstone from the slumbering Dragon.
But despite their well thought out plan there was a huge factor they had forgot to think about. The dragon himself! Even if they got back there legendary stone they still had a big fire breathing monster to take care of.
"So what do we do now?" Thorin asked his fellow dwarfs (and hobbit), and Balin (The old and wise one of the group) stepped up and said "I have been looking through all the rooms of this place, and I think I might have an idea."
Smaug was still in his deep slumber, when a hard tossed diamond on his eyelid woke him up. "Who dares to try come here and attack me?!" The dragon asked furiously, and Bilbo stepped out from behind a pillar saying "It was me, and I bet you can't capture me!" before running off.
"Come back here you little prick!" Smaug shouted, and got up and following the small hobbit.
The chase took them out of the treasure chamber, down the many stairs, and finally into some big tall catacombs under the mountain.
Bilbo ran until he was standing under a certain opening in the ceiling and stopped. From behind he could hear the rumbling sound of the huge dragon putting down his claws into the stone floor, and knew that it wouldn't take long before Smaug also would be with him.
"Why are they taking their time?" Bilbo thought worryingly, and just then a long rope started to be lowered down from the opening.
"Finally!" Bilbo thought, and grabbed the rope as soon as he could reach it.
Just when doing that he could see that the Smaug had finally managed to catch up with him, and he didn't look happy. "This little game ends now." The Dragon said, and started charging towards him.
"Pull me up!" Bilbo shouted scared, and all of the dwarfs started the work of getting him away from the big monster.
Smaug opened his jaws wide to eat up the little annoying creature, but Bilbo just managed to avoid it when the dragon closed the jaws again, and got up safe through the hole.
Smaug was beyond upset over this and instead of trying to go back and search after them he decided to go for a much more "direct" approach. Opening his mouth again he planned to this time take and send a big fire flame up and hole and burn them all, but that was exactly what the group had planned for.
What Balin had found (and Smaug seemed to have forget) was that above the catacombs laid a room where the dwarfs that used to own the castle would take and melt large portions of their gold into statues. And it just so happen to have a hole to send a stream of melted gold down into the room below.
And that was exactly what they did as they directed the flow of the gold to go straight down into the room, and straight into Smaug's open mouth!
Given that Smaug was a pretty big dragon he didn't have the quickest of reflexes, and they managed to feed him a great deal of gold before he managed to move his head away from the opening.
But even after doing that he felt a bit "big" and "heavy", and looking down he saw why. He had now a belly that was filled to the brim with melted gold! He was know for being drawn to the gold (And even eating some coins at a few occasions), but this was far more then the dragon could take, and when he tried to quickly turn around and escape the inflated middle of him got him into bad balance, and he ended up tumbling onto his back with his now gold filled belly rising high above him. He had been defeated!
To weak to do anything else Smaug felt how his eyes got heavy and he fell asleep. When he woke up he was starting to feel a familiar feeling as he was consuming something, and when he woke he realized that he had been feed gold in his sleep! His belly was now even larger, and as he tried to escape he found out that his legs and neck was all chained up to the walls!
The dwarfs knew that almost nothing could kill this dragon, so they decided to instead make him into less of a threat.
At first they had to feed the dragon 3 to 4 portions of gold per week in order to keep him stuffed enough so that he wouldn't be able to move, but as time went on (and Samug's waistline got bigger) they saw that they could feed him as little as once of twice a week because of just how big he now was.
The once mighty dragon was now nothing but a bloated middle, with the long neck and small legs of a dragon attached to it. He was now so big and round that the poor thing couldn't do anything about. He not be feed anything for a month, and he would still barley lose 1% of his total body weight. He was pretty much immobile now, and to only add insult to injury the dwarfs still would force feed him some gold in order to be extra safe. (All that consuming of gold had even started to affect his own appearance, as all of his previous different coloured scales now was all taking the same golden shade. Whenever there was a stream of light finding it's way into the catacombs it would only take a small touch on one of his scales to start reflect up all of the room in light.)
Thorin, the now mighty king of the dwarfs had also found himself a fun little thing to do on his spare time.
Whenever he felt bored or in a bad mood, he would simply walk down to the catacombs and enjoy his special gold filled "trophy". He enjoyed feeling on the now gold covered dome, and either feel it being taunt hard (From Smaug's most resent meal.) or soft and flabby. (From having it being digested.) He even like to rub it in the dragon's face how silly he now looked, and how he would never be able to scare anyone again, and how he now looked like he was the King's "Prize".
Naturally this would cause Smaug into wanting to talk back to him, and that's when he gives the signal for them to send another load of gold into the dragon's mouth. Not being able to even move his head from the stream of melted gold (Since even his neck had now started to swell up with the golden fat.) Smaug knew he just had to lay there and take it. After finishing his "meal" the bloated dragon would let out a tired "Burp!",(Letting out a small fire cloud in the process.) much to the king's entertainment.
Smaug. The previous so feared and scary dragon, had now been turned into the world's only golden, ballooned out, stuffed, pet dragon.
