I've been working on/building them since the MakerBot Cupcake! it's been awhile!
Here's a few I've built:

The Printrbot is great for a cheap small printer! They've come a long way since their first kickstarter and have a good array of products!
For bigger ones I'd say the LulzBot TAZ or Ultimaker are nice machines, If you want to spend more time and less money, you can build kits yourself like a Prusa i3 or even a Delta type bot.

Wow, your printers look amazing! That last one is huge :D
Printrbot just released a new model for $399 with a 4x4x5 inch print space, but it just came out and there isn't a lot of tests or reviews of it yet.
It looks like there is no option to put a heated bed on it, but I think for such a small size and for printing PLA that should be OK.
Once some more people have tested it and I can find some videos on youtube I think I'm gonna go for that.
The main thing I want to print is small 3D artwork and figurines, so the size should be fine for me.

Thanks! They've taken awhile to build, but it's about the journey for me, so I don't mind!
The Play should be great! I'm sure you can look into fitting a heated bed onto it, if nothing else it should be easy just to stand off a piece of metal from the bed with some screws and put a heater mat on the underside of that. You'd only lose a half inch of build height maybe, but you'd have a heated bed!
A lot of people have good luck printing on PEI sheets or gluestick, elmer's glue-all, or hairspray cold with PLA, so you might be able to get away with that!
