On cardstock, with art pen.
Back in 2006, someone in the Furtopia IRC asked very sweetly for a free drawing of his (possibly wolf, possibly mixed breed) fursona. Although I told him not to expect anything immediately, I guess he was disappointed since he never responded to my weeks-later effort to contact him. Half was already inked, but I changed what I could (took away glasses, changed the shirt, etc).
This was a good learning experience for me, in many ways. But the most important was finding out how very useful having an in-person model is. It was one of the first times I asked someone to briefly pose for me, and it made a huge difference (that oversized arm is my foul-up & does not reflect the true proportions of the modeler).
I think I've improved on heads & muzzles since then.
