Endless Realms bestiary - Water Dragon Scion
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
In the game, dragons are, essentially, lesser gods - one for each major cosmic force and elemental power. Scions are earthly avatars of their will, and are generally much less powerful than the dragon they represent, as a dragon may create many lesser clones of itself to send out upon tasks, yet scions remain amongst the most powerful creatures to be found in the world.

Augh! Another good one! Love how, morphologically, this dragon scion looks like it would be at home in the water. A great deal of the time, a "water dragon" is just a scaly western dragon that happens to be blue, or an eastern noodle who just happens to be in the water. This creature, though, is adapted to water locomotion, with webbed claws, small, stream-lined scales, and undulating fin surfaces.
You grow more and more in my esteem with every picture.

Thank you so much <3
Heh, I know what you mean (dawww, eastern noodle dragon! :3 The most delicious of dragons :b) - I wanted it to be more serpentine where possible, to get that sleek, elegant, hydrodynamic feel: a water dragon should, I imagine, feel "fluid" :V So I liked the idea of lots of flowing, undulating lines created by the large lateral fins, but it still looking a bit like a classic dragon and having distinct "wings" (which is what the art director wanted).
I was an animal biology major, and while most of my creature designs are fantastical and has to please an art director's specific tastes, I do try to make nods towards sensible anatomical design when I can :)

I don't suppose the dragons' will is to send these scions out to bring passion and pleasure to the creatures below? That would be a most agreeable task. Especially considering the way you've beautifully melded the wings to the body in such an organic fashion. Gorgeous!
It looks like you've actually considered real animals with membranous wings!(bats) But that smooth integration is everywhere on this one, and makes for a beautiful animal with a shape that really flows.

Thank you very much! Yeah, I definitely was focusing on trying to create a fluid and flowing creature, but strangely enough I was actually thinking of sea creatures that use undulation like rays, rather than bat wings, but I can definitely see it!
Heh, I imagine it's not a primary focus, but I'm sure some of them might! The chaos dragon comes to mind, for sure, haha. I could see the fire dragon being rather passionate, as well :b

Hey, thank you so much <3
As for the water reflections, I cheated and used a stock photo texture overlay - put it on its own layer, then mess around with layer options like Overlay and Soft Light, adjusting colour/contrast/etc as needed as you go. I try to take good reference photos of various textures whenever I go hiking or camping, but there should be a number of free ones available on the internet :3
