Akutan is about 40 miles east of Dutch Harbor, the town often featured in the TV series "Deadliest Catch." The Aleutians were the first part of Alaska colonized by Russia in the 18th century, and the influence is still visible.

Yes. There are active Orthodox churches in many towns in SW Alaska.

I recall reading about the Orthodox Church in Alaska a while ago but couldn't remember if it's still going. Nice, adds some variety to local culture :)

The culture in this part of Alaska is an interesting mix of Native, Russian, and American. The Russian influence is most visible in the church and in people's surnames.
