Another attempt at realism, after recently portraying a husky. I wanted to do something more colorful this time, so I went with a tiger This style really is quite a bit of work, but also satisfying. I like how this turned out, and might do realistic portraits more often from now on.

It sure is! Actually, for me it feels like a step less: I have always trouble drawing stuff out of my imagination. Without any kind of reference, I'm lost. Drawing something that is in front of me feels so much more natural. Too bad I can't have an anthro sitting pose for me XD But I guess that's what figure drawing with models is there for, and drawing actual animals is then the complementing step for that art form.
As someone who started as a cartoonist, I can't help but make things up - my eye jitters around a bit, so I have to build the skeleton on up. (Hell, some pretty famous artists don't - John Tenniel famously refused to use models, and even if he could do this (commemmorating the British victory over India at Cawpore in 1857 - to be fair, in 1857 there wasn't a lot of photo reference of leaping lions), his Alice still has a head far too big for her body...
But like I tell you - that's good, it means you don't have to unlearn as many bad habits.
