This was taken at the Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado on 2015-06-14.
I adored the sharp contrast between the partly cloudy sky, the Rocky Mountains, and the far edge of the Sonoran Desert, so I snapped this shot.
I wish I could have gotten the chance to hike in the Sand Dunes, but we didn't have time and the closest path was across a watery area that people were actually swimming in.

It would be more accurate, in my opinion, to say that there are pockets of desert that start somewhat within the mountain range in the southern area of the Rockies which eventually become more and more numerous as you go further south and drop altitude until you start seeing tall cacti.
It's a beautiful area of the USA for sure!
