The weird dude said something like. "I shall play the song of my people!" and did a really weird dance while "playing" his squeeze box thing. The music was not even in time with his wild and unsettling moving around. I don't think he really knows how to play that awful thing.

No, most of them were given to him by his grandmother, or as gifts, or found just "laying around"
Gypsies don't necessarily "Do" anything. They're a scattered and often traveling group of people with various dialects of a language of unknown though probably indo-european origin, and they are genetically grouped. Their culture and ethnicity is like their language unified in a sense but very specific to various localities. They are more correctly termed the Roma people. You can't "go be one" but you can certainly at your own risk meet and converse with them. There is also for some reason a concentration of Roma to be found living a more settled Americanized lifestyle in certain parts of the mid-west, especially Nebraska.
