Bearding the Dragon
Vargr's not sure where the inspiration for this one came from, but this wuff was waylayed at a breakfast buffet with the image of a wolven story-teller, standing in the night on a bared circle of dirt before a campfire, enacting and telling this tale to a throng of shadowy, furry figures just outside the fire's light, their eyes glowing in the darkness.
This one feels like a 'good one', folks! A rather different take on an adventurer seeking out a dragon for the treasure it hords.
Don't worry, dragon fans. No violence, no mayhem, and no cliched knights in shining armor trying to stick it to the scaly beasts.
Be that as it may, Vargr hopes you enjoy this offering. Wuff feels its something special.

*nods* Given 'forever' to look forward too, even the most interesting pastimes must ultimately become commonplace after a while. But every individual is unique, so interaction with them must be a refreshing 'renewable resource'. In the end, even a dragon must succumb to the truism, "No man is an island". *smiles*
On the other paw, just THINK of all the fun and 'interesting' tricks a dragon would be able to teach his friend about inflation, or any number of other pastimes! *grins*
Thanks for the compliment, and very glad you enjoyed this story!

That was excellently written, Varghr. Of course, I've come to expect nothing less from you. Only problem was, I more or less knew where the story was going before I began to read it.
Y'see, I can't even recall the last time I read a story about somebody slaying a dragon. It was probably "The Hobbit". Since then, it's always been about the dragon dispatching his persecutors, or the would-be slayer learning the error of his xenophobic ways, or some perspicacious loner befriending the dragon. Nobody just kills the damn thing, anymore.
Stil, unarguably quality worksmanship, even if the plot didn't work for me.

*the Wuffy grins*
You're right, the 'friendly dragon' scenario has become rather a cliche these days. On the other paw, wuff looks at this more as a "friendly knight" story than a friendly dragon one. After all, our dragon seemed quite willing to devour his intruder during the tale. It does definitely fit with your third variant though (The perspicacious loner).
Hmm... ya know, perhaps Vargr ought to explore the alternatie you suggest? Wuff hasn't really written much in the 'dark and gritty' line. Maybe this wuff needs to 'stretch his wings' a bit a try his paw at a 'slay the beast' tale, though whether that beast be a dragon or something else remains an open option.
Wuff's glad you found the reading enjoyable, even if the plot was predictable. That's a nice testiment to this wuff's writing skills; to be able to make the predictable entertaining. Thank you muchly for that compliment!

I'm really glad that what I said was useful. Being something of a jerk at heart, it's all too easy for me to stray into the realms of gratuitous abuse if I'm not careful, and I'm glad I avoided that. You really are a great author, and the last thing I'd want to do is anger or discourage you to no good end.
With regard to your potential "slay the beast" tale, it occured to me while I was writing my initial comment that if there were a population of dragons in the modern world, they'd probably be responsible for policing themselves, if only to stay on good terms with the smaller, technologically advanced races. After all, they have sniper rifles these days that can punch through a foot of concrete...

Thank you very much for the nice remarks! It really seemed to touch some emotional chords in this wuffy, too!
>> I can't help wondering what those two are going to do for fun now, though.
*grins* Oh, I'm sure they'll find SOMETHING fun to pass the time with!
Of course, were that Vargr playing the part of the "knight", the first thing that comes to mind would involve a dragon who's been on a fast for a few centuries, a nearby feedlot mysteriously found empty, a ver large heard of 'missing' steers, and a certain wuffy testing out the tensile strength and elasticity of a dragon's tummy-scutes. *chuckles*
