[Personal/OC Training] Damn it, Joe!!!
For the OC training group on DeviantArt. It will be a few weeks before I'm allowed to post it on DA, but there's nothing stopping me from posting it here.
The Challenge: draw your character with an animal.
There is a shoggoth that lives and works at the offices in Scarlet's facility that everybody calls Joe because nobody can pronounce his real name. I was debating whether or not to use Joe in this challenge since he's more sentient than animal.... albeit a sentient with a simpler mind.
Joe does not understand many concepts that others find simple. Among them the concepts of ownership and asking for what he wants.... So he is often seen raiding the break room refrigerator for employee lunches.
Scarlet herself is in no danger of being eaten. Joe is pretty friendly and cuddly and knows that if he eats someone that he likes, they never come back.
Please, for the love of Cthulhu, do not leave any Japanese hentai tentacle porn comments! Not only do I have zero interest in anything related to sex, but these comments will make me very uncomfortable since Joe literally has the mentality of a small child. Any comments of the like will be ignored and hidden.

I wonder how trainable Joe is. Maybe Scarlet should do the old "animal discipline" routine that my no-pain household uses. When he does something bad, you either scare him or smack him just hard enough to make a loud noise - nothing that causes pain, but something that immediately gets his attention. Something good, you reward him with pets, noms, whatever he likes most.
Now I've got this image of Scarlet baiting a no-touch lunch with a mousetrap, so when he disturbs it, it goes off.

I guess it depends on how over the line his sentience is. If I stuck my hand into a lunchbox and got one of those springy snakes in my face, I would wonder "Who put this thing here and how quickly can I hurt them?" An animal just thinks, "Eeek! Scary!" *runs away*
Dealing with "Starfish Aliens" is a very different kettle of fish then dealing with stubborn critters, and to make matters worse, Joe is some of both. ^.^
