Chapter 23
“Go Surskit!” exclaimed Viola while tossing her Poké Ball into the air.
In a flash of white light, a small blue and yellow Pokémon on four thin legs appeared on the wooden floor. It skittered about like an elegant dancer as it awaited its trainer’s instruction.
“Go on,” said the gym leader with a wide grin and her green eyes sparkling. “Choose which Pokémon you think is the most photogenic. I want to take the best picture I can when they lose.”
David glanced sideways at the Butterfree on his shoulder. “What do you say to starting this battle against her Surskit?”
“Gladly,” agreed Casper as he flew off his trainer with a flutter of his wings.
“The rest of us will stay with Alexa and watch,” said Fredric while herding the rest of the team off the battle area. “We’ll help cheer you on.”
“That’s a surprise,” said Viola with a wink at the boy. “Most trainers find out that I run a bug-type gym and they come at me with fire types. Let’s see how your bug fairs against mine! We’re ready big sis.”
Alexa left David’s Pokémon at the edge of the battle area and walked out between the battlers. She raised her hand into the air.
“David,” she started while turning her head slightly in his direction. “Viola already knows this, but there are certain rules that make gym battles different from battling regular trainers. The challenger, that’s you, can switch out your Pokémon as much as it suits you. Viola will not be allowed to switch out Pokémon. Instead, she’ll be allowed the use of one Potion whenever she sees fit. The battle is over when one trainer is unable to use any of their Pokémon.”
“Since this is your first gym battle, I will only be using two Pokémon,” said Viola with confidence in both her grin and her stance. “But I definitely won’t be going easy. You’re not fighting against any old cheap, disposable camera. I’ve got some professional equipment in my arsenal.”
Alexa grinned and rolled her eyes before she dropped her arm in a decisive movement. “Let this battle begin!”
“You can even have the first move,” taunted Viola as her Surskit slid from side to side like a menacing pendulum. “Since you happen to be so cute.”
“Casper,” said David with narrowed green eyes. “Use Gust.”
The Butterfree flapped his wings harder and wind whipped up across the battle arena. Viola raised her arms to shield her face from the move. Her Surskit was lifted off the ground and thrown back into the wall where it lay unmoving.
“Surskit!” exclaimed the gym leader as she rushed to the Pokémon’s side. She breathed a sigh of relief as the Pokémon tried to struggle to its legs but couldn’t quite seem to get the energy to fully lift its body off the ground. “I’m glad you’re okay, but you’re definitely in no condition to continue. Return.”
The blue bug-Pokémon vanished in a flash of red light into the ball in Viola’s hand. She straightened up and turned towards David with another Poké Ball at the ready.
“That was some powerful Gust your Butterfree has,” she commented softly. “I’ve grown too used to letting my Surskit polish my lens with the fire types most trainers bring and then finishing off everything else they have with my other Pokémon. It’s time I set up for the shot of a lifetime. I wasn’t going to use this Pokémon against you, but I think you might be strong enough to make it an interesting battle. Go Vivillon!”
The gym leader tossed her ball into the air and out popped another butterfly-like Pokémon with a thin gray body and pink wings. The wings had several shades of pink on them and a few speckles of blue-green. It gracefully flew around Viola before settling on her raised elbow.
“You have the chance to switch to a different Pokémon now,” said Viola in all seriousness. “Do you wish to battle my Vivillon with anything else?”
“One moment,” said David as he flipped his bag off his shoulder and pulled out his Pokédex. He aimed it at the Pokémon.
“Vivillon,” it replied in its strong male voice while displaying a butterfly Pokémon with a different pattern and colouration on its wings. This one had orange wings with small red and brown spots on them and a green, yellow and brown band on the lower half. “The Scale Pokémon.”
“Why does the one registered in my Pokédex look different from yours?” asked David in confusion.
“Mine is a Meadow Vivillon,” said Viola with a proud grin. “The type of climate they are hatched into affects what pattern their wings will display.”
“Cool,” said David with a grin. “I think I’ll just stay with Casper though.”
“HELLO GORGEOUS!” exclaimed Flint while pelting out onto the battle field and flying around Viola.
“Flint?!” exclaimed David.
“You stupid bird!” yelled Casper in fury. “Get your flaming butt off the battle field while I’m in the middle of a battle!”
The fire bird ignored both of them while he continued to fly closer and closer to the Vivillon. “Come on baby, you know you want some of this.”
“What on earth is up with your Fletchinder?!” yelped Viola in alarm. “Are you going to battle with it instead?”
“No,” grumbled David through gritted teeth. “Casper, can you please get him off the battle field?”
With a scowl, the butterfly swooped over to the fire bird and dumped a scattering of glittering gold powder on him. Casper then shot a gust on Flint while he fell and hurled him towards the other four Pokémon who had been staring on with mixed degrees of horror (or amusement in Brylie’s case). The Fletchinder dropped into a pile of orange feathers and remained unmoving.
Alexa and Viola both stared at David in mixed alarm and awe. Casper flew back to David and landed on his orange hair with a satisfied nod of his head.
“Stun spore?” asked David with a grin.
“Works every time,” replied Casper in smug contentment.
“No wonder your Butterfree’s powerful,” commented Viola with wide eyes. “I gather your Fletchinder doesn’t listen to you since you don’t have the badges to prove yourself worthy to it.”
“Sort of,” murmured the boy with a shrug. “He really just has a thing for Pokémon who can fly. He can’t seem to resist flirting with them. Regardless of gender. Although, Casper knows how to put up with him.”
“Really,” said the gym leader with a grin at her Vivillon. “Then let’s see who’s got the better butterfly.”
“Right!” agreed David.
“Vivillon,” exclaimed Viola. “Use Tackle!”
“Casper, Sleep Powder before it can attack!”
Both butterflies flew out to meet each other. The Vivillon tried to slam into Casper, but the Butterfree dodged at the last minute and filled the air with a glittering greenish powder. The pink butterfly flew through it and flopped onto the ground.
“No!” yelped Viola.
“Gust,” said David. “I don’t think it’ll stay asleep very long. We need to defeat it while we can!”
Casper whipped up another gust across the battle area. The opponent was lifted off the ground and thrown back beside Viola.
“It’s time I use this,” exclaimed Viola as she pulled out a small purple spray bottle. She dusted her Pokémon with it. “Hopefully it can hold on until it can wake up and deal some real damage!”
“Confusion,” commanded David and a beam of purple-pink light rippled out from Casper’s red eyes and centered on the sleeping Vivillon.
“Come on!” yelled Viola. “I know you can wake up! I believe you can do it Vivillon!”
“One more Gust should do it,” said David.
Casper flapped his wings harder and once again wind whipped across the arena. The Vivillon blinked its eyes and fluttered its wings to barely lift itself off the ground when the gust hit it full on. It was thrown back onto the stairs behind Viola and lay in a crumpled heap.
“No,” yelped Viola while running back to her Pokémon. She lifted it in her arms and returned it to its ball in a flash of red light.
“David is the winner!” exclaimed Alexa while rushing onto the battle field. “And his Pokémon didn’t even attain any damage. You must be losing your touch little sis.”
“That was over before I could even get in a decent shot,” said Viola while sounding slightly mournful. “But, I guess this is yours. You’ve defeated me fair and square.”
She held out her arm towards him and dropped something which looked like a beetle-shaped pin in his hand. He held it closer to inspect it.
“Congratulations David, you have earned the Bug Badge,” said Viola with a grin. “And, for beating me so badly, you owe me a date!”

Talon's Rules
1. All Pokemon (with maybe the exception of your starter if you so wish) must have been obtained within a Wonder Trade upon starting the game.
2. You have six slots in your party. You must have three pokemon you can interchange per slot. Pokemon from the same group slot can never be in your party at the same time. Only one per group slot at a time. You will have a grand total of eighteen pokemon as part of your team.
3. If a Pokemon should faint, it is considered "DEAD" and must be either released or placed in the PC. Once all three pokemon from a group slot have fainted, you can only use five pokemon at a time.
4. No buying items (with the exception of the Poke Balls used to aid you in your Wonder Trade). All items are found in the region (or if you are super lucky, you may be able to rely on a pokemon whose ability is Pick Up as I have). Buying TMs in the Shop is the exception.
