almost looks like a vector render, but so smooth in its lighting transition that it's soft.

it's basically an image that's made in a vector program, like illustrator. It's crisp yet difficult to blend in it.

I was rather startled when I saw this piece, as it's rare to see an image that has a severe dakr/light contrast which doesn't fall back on beating black to death. Your use of subtle greys and pale varients is both aesthetically pleasing, and generally more challenging to create decently. The eyes are drastic, in a good way, they sort of way that draws you in but doesn't overpower everything else (such as with overuse of black and a singular colour source)

The grass doesn't seem to blend well with the rest of the colour scheme, it almost seems it should be stone, something with a dark grey, or perhaps subtle gold tones to match the eyes.

*favs this* Quite a.. doodle.. ya got here, lol. I actually somewhat disagree with Verlor, though. If you used a colour other than the dark green for the grass you would lose the almost 3-D appearance of the piece. Having the green gives the entire image more depth and realism.

Yeah... I have pictures of wolves all over my house, so there is plenty to look from. XD I try to use ref for most everything i do...

It certainly turned out well. I tend to use references for most of my pictures, too, unless I already have plenty of experience on the particular subject.
