Masqlings are a closed species.
This means you may not make your own at this time--thank you for understanding!
Masqlings are a semi-anthropomorphic species of mammal. They primarily walk on two legs, but are able to walk on all four. They are relatively short in stature (around 3-4 feet tall, average) in their normal form, but can grow to be several times as large in their masquerade form.
Masqlings are not born with the masks that they carry, but craft them out of magic when they are a year or two old, using a special ritual. From this point on, a Masqling will carry their mask for the rest of their life, as this is what gives them the power to perform magic. If a Masqling loses their mask, they will be unable to craft another and cannot use magic ever again.
Putting the mask on their face causes a Masqling to change form into what is called their "masquerade form." They become larger in size (often 3x or more larger) and tend to change in appearance, becoming a large monster. They can look totally different in shape, but their colors will always remain almost the same. They also, obviously, must be wearing the mask in this form. (You can design this form for your Masqling!)
Masqlings only have 1 masquerade form, except in very special cases.
Using this form takes a lot of energy. Some Masqlings can only maintain it for less than an hour and, in rare cases, powerful Masqlings can do so for up to 6 hours. It usually takes at least 24 hours of rest before a Masqling can use this magic form again.
They can cast small spells in their normal forms, but most magic use happens in masquerade form.
All Masqlings MUST:
Follow the general body shape shown above (including tufts on ears, hips, etc. These tufts do not necessarily have to be fur.).
Have a mask with a sigil.
Have a theme! This can be anything, but each specific theme may only be used once.
Tails:
Fluffy, thin tufted, and magic/whispy tails are all common on Masqlings.
Drippy and shark or fish tails are uncommon.
Lizard/reptilian tails are rare.
Masqlings may also have other tail styles, but these are also rare.
Other Features:
Masqlings can have a number of other features--including extra accessories, changes in fur style, etc. These should all be considered common.
Wings (of any style), horns/antlers, and spines, may also be present--these should be considered uncommon.
Extravagant versions of these features (huge wings, horns, etc.) are rare.
Masks:
Masks are most commonly oval in shape. Different shapes are rare.
All masks must have a sigil--these commonly are only 1 color.
Gradient colored sigils are uncommon.
Sigils with 2 or more colors are rare.
All masks have ribbons, which may change in length thanks to their magical properties.
Usually, when not in use, a Masqling will tie their mask to a part of their body other than their face.
Masquerade Form:
Masquerade Forms must always be wearing the same mask that the Masqling possesses in regular form (including the same sigil).
These forms must also utilize the same color scheme as their regular form.
Other than this, Masquerade Forms are largely varied in appearance, and may take the shape of monsters, mythical beasts, or other large creatures.
Rules:
When you adopt a Masqling, you are free to give them whatever name and gender you would like.
You may make small changes to your design after you obtain ownership of them.
You may not use your Masqling for commercial purposes.
