I've been drawing this little guy a lot, as well as some other marine mammal characters. He is more anthro then mer, since the face is more seal-ish and there is fur. Maybe he is a selkie like in Irish myth.
I always see harbor seals at the local beaches, and have grown quite fond of them.

Yes! It's great to compare, especially how seals/sea lions are really different, in the manner that the "eared seal" is much more mobile on land and has a more developed leg structure in that regard, whereas the "true seals" are less so. I was really surprised when I looked that up; I love it when I feel a small part of my general cloud of ignorance evaporate. =-P
We have examples of both here. Sealions are so abundant they sink the floating docks and even people's boats with their immense weight in Newportand are an annoyance to local fishermen. xD They can turn their hind flippers under their bodies and actually gallop/run around at a decent speed. Harbor seals are everywhere, just more spread out, and watching them wriggle around on land is pretty funny since they can't use their hind flippers. This character uses a skateboard or wheelchair when on land. :D
Working on the boats, it was always fun to watch the seals. When they come up on the buoys and jetties to rest, it's amazing how something so graceful in the water can look so much like a huge chubby sea dachshund. He better dive into the kelp though, that orca looks hungry.
Neat pic, brought back good memories.
