They represent two distinct genetic lines within the taxonomic order of corcodilia. Sort of like how bears and canines both fall under the order of caniformia, and branched-off hundreds of thousands of years ago from a common ancestor.
In the Alligator family there are the American alligator which is found exclusively in the southern US, and the Chinese alligator, which is found in a small region of eastern China. Caimans are another branch of the alligator family, that are found throughout South and Central America.
The Crocodile family is much more widespread, with species in southern Florida and the Caribbean, Central and South America, and throughout Africa, Asia, and Australia. Also branched-off from the crocodile family are gharials, which are exclusive to India.
