Chapter 24
“So,” said Alexa while walking beside David along the garden-like path. Ledyba and Flabébé were flying lazily from flower bush to flower bush through the hedges around them. A couple Skitty were playing around the edge of a large water fountain as they passed by it. “What do you think?”
“About what in particular?” asked the boy. “Your sister as dating material?”
“Ha!” barked the reporter causing the Helioptile curled around her shoulders to almost fall off. “While she can be a stubborn, pigheaded brat sometimes, she really means well. She’s far better at battling than I am and she’s quite suited for being a Gym Leader. Although, you took her by surprise. Her usual battle strategy resolves around knocking out all the fire- or rock-types she usually comes up against with her Surskit. You defeated her with her own game and used your Butterfree. I’m pretty sure the next battle between you two won’t be so easy.”
“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to beat her that easily either,” he confided.
“It seems surprise can be a powerful weapon,” contemplated Alexa while running her thumbnail along her lip as she thought. “I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how you take on the other Gym Leaders. By the way, I don’t believe you’ve officially introduced me to the latest additions to your team. I understand you are training a few of the other Pokémon from your Wonderlocke Team?”
“Right,” said David while moving his head to look up and getting an irate squawk from the bird roosting there. “You’ve already met Flint, Casper, Brylie and Giordan.”
“Indeed,” said the young woman with a nod.
“From the Blue Team, I withdrew Wenona, my Beedrill,” said David while gesturing to the Bug-Pokémon who was buzzing angrily and pointedly not looking at him as she flew beside Casper. “She’s not happy over missing some of the gym fun while she was in the box. The other one is Ian, my Inkay. He’s taking Fredric’s place for a little while. Apparently, the original trainer who hatched him is the exact same one who also hatched Giordan before putting them both through the Wonder Trade system. It’s a miracle I got them both, but they seem quite happy to be with each other, and I’m happy for them too.”
Alexa eyed him over with narrowed eyes. “How do you know that?” she asked slowly. “I suspected there was more to you than you were letting on. Can you understand what the Pokémon around you are saying?”
“I,” hesitated David as he met Casper’s eyes. The Butterfree made a slight nodding motion.
Wenona was too angry to reply and he was sure Flint was pretending to sleep on top of his head. Ian and Giordan had been floating very close to each other ever since recognising each other back in the Pokémon Center. Brylie was unusually quiet, which meant she was probably plotting something.
“Yes, I can. I’ve always been able to understand them,” muttered David as his shoulders slumped. “Ever since I was old enough to talk, I could understand Fredric and mom’s Charger and Fleet. Er, that’s the Rhyhorn she races with and her Fletchling. I’ve never told mom … It was clear that she couldn’t understand them like I could.”
“That certainly explains why you are able to bond so fast to the Pokémon you just obtained in your Wonder Trade!” exclaimed Alexa. “It’s not a very common gift! I’ve heard rumors, particularly in the Unova region, of some ancient families who had passed it down as a gift from a legendary Pokémon. I never thought I’d get to meet someone who actually has the gift!”
“Can you please not tell anyone else?” asked David ducking his head and raising his shoulders in a subconscious bid to make himself look smaller. His motion caused Flint to be dropped out of his hair with another indignant squawk.
Alexa stopped short and stared at him in alarm. “Okay, what happened?”
David stopped as well and muttered something under his breath.
“David,” said the woman while grabbing his shoulders and turning him so she could look in the face. “Who did you tell before?”
By now, his Pokémon had gathered around; each showing differing expressions of concern. Even Wenona, who was still buzzing angrily, and Brylie, who had a mask of boredom on, were showing signs of unease at the situation.
“I told a friend in school,” muttered David softly. “They told the rest of the class and I was bullied for it. ‘Faker’ … That was what they called me. I didn’t really have any friends after that. They all seemed to think I was trying to act like I was better than them. At least that’s some of the rumors I grew up to.”
“David,” said Alexa while putting her stern fingers under his chin and making him look up at her. “You are not a fake. I’ve seen my sister pulverize almost all the trainers who go against her. You took her on and made defeating her look like it was easy. Something I will definitely be writing about, as I owe her over the teacup incident, but that aside, your ability to understand the words spoken by your Pokémon companions gives you a certain strength other trainers could only dream of! It allows you to build up a trust which takes most trainers several badges to do. It’s something you should be proud of, not scared of. You can get to the heart of what is bothering your Pokémon and you can help them instead of trying to guess.”
“I-” stammered the boy. He swept his eyes over the Pokémon gathered around him.
“We’re always going to be here for you,” said Casper while landing on his shoulder. “You showed me I could believe in you when I had given up being strong at all.”
“Like it or not,” buzzed Wenona. Her drone sounded a little less angry and more like a purr. “You showed me that I’m not the only one who’s been abandoned. You’re my trainer whether you like it or not.”
“Goof,” said Brylie while offering him an Ultra Ball with her ears. “I can’t believe I’m saying this as I thought the words would never come out of my mouth. You’ll always be good enough for me.”
“And me,” chimed in Giordan. “You haven’t trained with me as much as the others, but I’m with you.”
“Yay!” squeaked Ian while doing a hovered cartwheel beside the Gourgeist. “An adventure with my best friend and a nice trainer!”
“I suppose you’ll do,” grumbled Flint while rolling black eyes which couldn’t completely hide his affection. “Makes a bloody useful perching post.”
“I promise I won’t mention anything about your ability in any of the stories I write until you are ready for me to,” said Alexa while putting her hand on his free shoulder.
David smiled as a tear leaked out of his eyes and he hugged the woman. Her Helioptile squeaked and leapt off her shoulder and Casper was forced to leave his.
“Thank you. Everyone.”

Talon's Rules
1. All Pokemon (with maybe the exception of your starter if you so wish) must have been obtained within a Wonder Trade upon starting the game.
2. You have six slots in your party. You must have three pokemon you can interchange per slot. Pokemon from the same group slot can never be in your party at the same time. Only one per group slot at a time. You will have a grand total of eighteen pokemon as part of your team.
3. If a Pokemon should faint, it is considered "DEAD" and must be either released or placed in the PC. Once all three pokemon from a group slot have fainted, you can only use five pokemon at a time.
4. No buying items (with the exception of the Poke Balls used to aid you in your Wonder Trade). All items are found in the region (or if you are super lucky, you may be able to rely on a pokemon whose ability is Pick Up as I have). Buying TMs in the Shop is the exception.
