"Oh Gods it's him!" Molly squealed like a teenage girl.
"Yes, Molly that is him." Galen's tone was reproachful but only for comedy value. He knew what was next and he loved her for it. The subject of their talk stood alone across a broad gallery, where stood the Unicorn known only by the single name of Renn. He appeared to be inspecting a painting, going over the strokes and enjoying the work as few do.
"Now Molly we could talk to him but don't scare him off."
"No, no I'll be nice!" Molly bit her lower lip and Galen smirked only because he knew she would not see it. Like many girls Molly had a infatuation on stories of Unicorns and Renn in particular. Once Galen even spotted her standing in front of a mirror putting a candlestick to her forehead.
Galen didn't resent it, actually he supported it with literature and he seemed to always insist on the separation of facts from the gossip. The two of them would visit the local orphanage run by the "Mothers of the Lost" which is a group many say Renn himself started. When they were there Molly would beg for any stories she could get about the Unicorn.
"Alright Molly remember your manners." and with that the two moved forward. As they drew closer one of Renn's ears pricked back and he turned to gaze at them. Galen got a cool look. His wizard robes were often met with suspicion at the very least. However he looked at Molly and back at Galen again and the moment of recognition appeared to lighten his expression. A wide smile bloomed and his head shook with a chuckle. Before either could speak Renn addressed them.
"Am I in the presence of the mighty, mystical, far seeing Galen Wordsmythe the greatest wizard of all time?" Renn asked in a comical tone.
"Sir, you forgot to mention .....all powerful!" Galen retorted. With that the two bowed to one another in a silly fashion that seemed to be rehearsed ahead of time. Of course it was through the orphaned children that the three would know of each other. Renn's eyes turned to Molly and his tone was most gentle.
"This pretty young lady could only be...UMMPPFFF!"
It is said then Renn was fast enough to catch a loosed arrow but apparently not fast enough to dodge Molly's attack hug. She leaped forward and wrapped her arm's around Renn's neck fast enough to make any predator proud. Were it not for Renn's incredible sense of balance the two might have landed hard on stone floor but Renn caught her and held her with as much affection as any father gave a daughter.
Galen mused at the spectacle and considered how much he needed to tell Molly about the state of things.
Oh Molly if you only knew just who you were gripping on to. There are many gateways in our world some are unknown and some are quite known and feared. One of them is not too far from here and every day a wizard checks to see if it is still and then he goes back to his home writes his report and goes about the rest of the day.
...and each night I hear the screaming from the other side. Molly if that gate opens Renn might be the only one to stop the evil that waits there. We need to keep him alive Molly for all our sake.
