*Drip* …. *drip*
That was the only thing that Bobby Baylor heard as he sat in the locker room. After the buzzer sounded in the grueling game 6, it was hard for anyone on the Arctics to handle with what happened. They were eliminated. The strong finish of the regular season, making it out of Seattle, and overpowering a tough Howlers team was shriveled away after a fourth loss to the Santa Ana Spectrums. Knowing this hit everyone hard, especially the big polar bear star…
Bobby sighed in clear frustration and banged the locker that was behind him. “Shit…” The bear said gently as he slid the headband off his forehead.
He stared at it for what seemed like 5 minutes before clenching it in his paws. “10 years....” He mumbled. “Over 10 damn years… we were so close to finally achieve that goal… Now we’re back to square one…”
*Drip*
He began to rub his eyes a bit, trying to prevent himself from tearing up. Even if he is alone right now, he still didn’t want that negative side to show. He knows his time is running out, just the thought of that makes Bobby shiver. Plus with the fact that next year is the final year of his contract with the team that was most loyal to him as he was to them didn’t help either. A lot was going through the bear’s mind, and he’s not sure if he’s able to go through with the media tonight in this state.
A few moments later, the locker room door slowly creaked open. It caught Bobby’s attention as he got up slowly. He assumed it was one of the trainers making sure he was alright, but instead it was a younger polar bear walking in. He wore a pair of blue jeans, white t-shirt and an Arctics jersey with the number 24 on it. The older bear couldn’t help but smile and scratched the back of his head. “Hey there Marc.”
“Hey there big bro”, Marcus Baylor said as he fist bumps his older brother. “What are you doing back here all by yourself?”
The older bear’s smile faded a little as he folded his arms. “Eh.. ya know… just been… thinking a little bit.” He said quietly as he sat back on the bench.
Marcus frowned from that response. He then looks straight at Bobby and asked. “About the future?”
The older brother didn’t say a word, and simply slouched and rub his head in frustration. All Marcus could do was sigh and took a seat next to him. The room was once again silent, both bears wondering what to say next. The younger brother stared up to the ceiling, it was one of his ways to figure what the best thing to say when someone has a problem.
As he continued to stare, Marcus began to smirk again peacefully. He turned to his brother and gently patted him on the back. “Hey man, remember when we first played together at Blizzard University…”
Bob began to chuckle a little. “Yeah home season opener against Eastern Ontario. The night where the school could see the little Baylor shine.” He said.
“But I didn’t…” The little bear said softly. “I was upset and frustrated that I didn’t do nearly as well as I wanted in my first night as a Climber… and later that night when I was sulking at how shitty I was and wonder if I even belonged there my big bro came up to me… You know what he said?”
Bobby stared at him for a bit. He then smiled and looked down at his shoes and finally replied, “Don’t treat this as a failure.... treat it as a bump on the road.”
“Exactly.” Marc said as he nodded. “I never forgot those words Bobby… and now it’s time for me to remind you that. This team has been able to do so much this season. Sure this season had ups and downs, but this is the very first squad in franchise history to make it to the Western Conference Finals. And your leadership helped out.
The younger bear then stands up and stood in front of his brother as he continued. “Out of the 20 years the Arctics have existed you have been the most loyal out of all us on the team now and the players who have been on this roster years before. You’re an important piece to this team, and this year proved that your piece matters as much as the next fur. Alaska has a true shot bro, I know it. And I know your skills and wisdom can take them over the hump.”
Marcus then hold out his paw. Bobby looked up with a huge smile on his face as he grabbed the younger brother’s paw tightly as he stood up. Shortly after, he hugged him close. “I love you bro… I needed that.” He said softly.
The young bear nodded and said. “Not a problem, I always got your back.”
When the hug was broken up, Bobby then began to wrap up emptying his locker. “Alright after we go back to Saskatoon to relax and see how our folks are doing for a little bit, We’re gonna have to go call Mr. Drago (Dorian Dragomirov, GM) and see if we can hook ya up again for the next couple of years.”
That’s when Marcus’ smile begin to fade. He gently sighed a little, and clenched his fist as if he was cringing. “Uh… yeah about that… I-”
“And after that we could call up Slade and Cliff to hang out and maybe talk a little bit about what goes on, maybe have a few scrimmages to work on next year.” Bobby said interrupting.
“Bobby liste-”
“And if you want we could chill out with Rodger, maybe he could hook us up with one of his favorite salons. My paws could use a little soothing here and there. Heh”
“That’s cool and all but can yo-”
“And we HAVE to go back to Frozen Lake High so we can talk to that Ol’ Man Fred, do a couple drills just like the old da-”
“BOBBY!!!!” Marcus screamed out frustration.
Bob flinched a little in surprise. He didn’t expect that kind of tone from his little bro. After he finished packing, he placed his sports bag on his shoulder as he said. “You alright man?”
Thee younger polar bear simply sighed as he leaned on one of the lockers, staring blankly at the floor. Bobby knew automatically something is up. He slowly went up to him and softly said. “Look you know you can tell me anything right? If someone is fucking with you or you’re feeling uneasy I can help you.”
“No… it’s not that…” Marcus spoke.
He took a small breath as he closed his eyes, trying his best to sound clear and smooth as he could. “There’s something been meaning to get off my chest… You’re my brother and I feel like you need to be the very first one to know.”
Bobby stood there quietly as he allowed his brother to continue.
“Ever since we clinched our spot in the playoffs this year… I kind of started thinking about my role on this team… This whole year all I’ve been doing was riding on the bench with a casual get up. I mean… it just seems like each year I just became less relevant than before. And knowing that I just earned 9 mil… for what? Basically being cheerleading benchwarmer? My career honestly… has been nothing but a plummet.” He said.
The older polar stood there for a minute to absorb what his little bro was saying. He quickly shook his head in total disagreement. “Whoah whoah whoah… wait a minute. You think you’re a burden to the team?” He asked. “Marcus, you’re just as important to this as I am.”
“Oh don’t give me that bullshit.” Marcus replied angrily. “If I was just as important as you are, I would be playing a hell of a lot more than I did this year. I would’ve been then one covering for Esteban when it was clear he wasn’t able to start anymore games. Ever since I got on this team, I wanted to show that I can make just as much of an impact as you could. Everyday… Every DAMN day, I try to work my ass off and prove that I was worth something!! Sadly it… wasn’t enough...”
Bobby’s maw was opened with the sense of tension surrounding them. “Marcus… Even if you can’t live up to the potential you set yourself… you can still be impactful. We can still talk to Drago… if he says no I can still help you get on a team.” He said quietly.
The younger bear sighed. “Honestly Bobby…” He says. “Trying to get me signed would be a waste of time…”
Bobby then looked at his brother angrily. “The fuck are you just gonna quit?” He replied with an angry growl. “Did you forget what the hell we JUST discussed, when I was down in the dumps about that loss?! ‘A bump on the road!!!’ ”
“Bobby… this is my bump...” Marcus said as he rest his head on the locker. “Not just a bump for my career, but my life as well.”
Bobby slowly begins to unclench his fist and placed his paw on his little bro’s shoulder. “Marcus, I know you have what it takes in this league. You’ve proven that to a lot of furs in the past.” He says.
The younger bear simply sighed as he gently moved his older brother’s paw off him. “I appreciate your words man… I do…” Marcus said. “But uh… I already made some plans for myself.”
Bobby took a couple a seconds, looking down at his brother with his eyebrow raised. He still couldn’t that his own brother has been planning to pull the plug on his career. He was a little hesitant at first, but he finally asked. “So… What are you gonna do?”
Marcus’ smile began to return, as if a weight was pulled right off his shoulder. “I’m glad you asked.” He says brightly. “So during the little break we had before the WCF, I flew on off to the TFSN Studio for an interview. They just got back to me and… I got the job. So basketball will still be with me. Even if I don’t play, I’ll still be around. It’s just… I think it’s time for people to not know me as ‘Bobby Baylor’s brother’, but as Marcus Baylor.”
He then slowly turned around and begins to walk away to the door. When Marcus placed his paw on the door and cracked it open, he stopped for a second. Without turning back, he yelled out. “Bobby… I just want to say thanks. You did your part for helping me out as not only a teammate, but as a brother. Take this team far bro, I’ll be watching.”
Finally he walked through the door. Silence had once again concealed the room for just a few moments.
*drip* …. *drip*
Bobby begins to rub his eyes as tears pour down his face. Trying to cope what reality just shoved right at his face. ‘The Baylor Bros’ were no more. For the first time in a very long time, Bobby Baylor was…. all alone.
