Auric in different styles (by Ashe Skyler)
This is a collection of assorted sketches of my winged golden jackal 'sona Auric done by Ashe Skyler who draws the webcomic Just Another Day, which is a fun read if you enjoy winged characters and poses for winged characters doing everyday activities. These sketches are exploring different art styles for an upcoming project.
I like most of the random styles and I liked all the full body poses so some of these will probably become full illustrations someday. Looking at some of the different styles I noticed that I like the versions where Auric is angular more than when his head, muzzle, or eyes get more rounded. It helps to keep his muzzle angular and his eyes tending toward slanted and almond shaped.
I made an edited version of the sketch sheet with numbers on the sketches so I could more easily refer to them. Here are some notes:
Full body sketches:
I like all the full body sketches.
F1: Sitting on a rock/ledge. I like the pose. Figuring out what to do with wings when sitting is an everyday hassle that a winged character would have to deal with. Auric would actually tend to shape-shift to a wingless form when not actually flying because wings are such a hassle, but for artwork it is fun to figure out how to sit with wings and that was one of the projects I had on my list of things to work on - sitting poses. It is hard to find good examples of winged characters sitting, in fact some of the best examples can be found in a webcomic I discovered several years ago...
F2: Sitting cross legged reading a book. I like the pose, and very Auric-like activity. The curve to the wings where they hit the ground is one of the slightly stylized poses used in the Just Another Day webcomic. A more realistic style wing posture would be out behind him like F1. A back view of this pose, looking over his shoulder at the book, might be interesting since it would show how his wings need to be laid out behind him.
F3: Reaching to the sky. I like the pose though I'm not fond of this style of wings except for in a piece that is intended to be abstract or mystical. Auric's tail has a more bird-like look here than the Archaeopteryx-like look it has in F5; I think if the tail feathers, particularly the bottom ones, were more clearly attached to the side of his tail it would make it look more Archaeopteryx-like in F3.
F4: Looking at hand w magic wisps. I like the pose and the outfit and the very understated thin wisps of magic. His head may be a bit small here (proportionally). The tail feather position could be adjusted to be a bit more Archaeopteryx-like. The clothing that Auric is wearing here is one of his most common default outfits.
F5: Starting line. On your mark, ready, set, go. I like the pose and the modern track exercise outfit. I like the Archaeopteryx-like tail feathers but they could be a bit closer together so they don't go quite so far down his tail, which could be a bit shorter since jackals have fairly short tails compared to foxes or wolves (http://www.la.lv/iespejams-ari-latv.....jusies-sakali/ Latvian news photo with both a golden jackal and a red fox). An alternate wing pose would be stretched out behind him. I may have to get a series of Auric doing a running takeoff to show different running poses, since I don't have a lot of action poses in my Auric artwork yet.
F6: Sitting Japanese Seiza style https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seiza . I like the pose and tail. Another good example of how to sit with wings. The bottom sketch here http://www.furaffinity.net/full/13397449/ (Kurai Reference 2.0 - by Tatchit) shows another possible wing posture for this pose. I think the back pocket on his shorts is interesting here but this pose would work best with an Asian outfit like his martial arts uniform from sketch F4.
Bust and waist-up sketches:
These are both comic style and in a style that tends to make his head more rounded (and his features rounded as well in B2). I don't have any problems with comic styles but I do prefer to keep his muzzle angular and eyes almond-shaped and slanted.
B1: The head shape is rounded and the muzzle is rather blunt instead of wedge shaped head and narrow tapered muzzle of jackals and foxes. I like to keep Auric's muzzle rather narrow and angular, that makes it easier to identify that he is a jackal rather than a wolf/dog.
B2: Cute comic version done in a very different style than is normal for Auric.
Headshots:
My favorite is H7, followed by H2 and H6. The variations in style are all fine. Here are some nice references to pictures of real Golden Jackals, to help show their head and muzzle shape. These might be helpful when doing a realistic style:
