You Otter Be Here!
By born2beagator and crisiswolf
Chris sat out by the riverbed, a line cast out, he smiled a bit enjoying the serenity of the scene. He reeled his rod in, not a bite, but Chris didn’t care, it was his day off, at the one place he really felt at peace. He looked at his watch, and grumbled to himself “Ugh it’s getting late” He muttered to himself, stared out in the distance noticing a river otter swimming freely. “Lucky you, no work or anything, just fishing and swimming all day” He bent over collecting his supplies, getting ready for another uneventful trip back home.
“That isn’t how you fish, silly human!” Said a playful sounding voice.
He looked around, not seeing anyone else around “Hey uh, who said that?” Chris shouted, wondering where the voice came from.
“I did!” The voice said again, followed by a splash.
Chris looked down, seeing only the otter, he chuckled rubbing his head “Hehe, I’m really losing it here, for a sec I thought you just talked” He laughed looking down at the otter.
“I did silly boy!” The otter said in her high voice.
“Er what?!” Chris backed up, staring at the otter almost speechless, “You… you can talk?”
“I can! My name is Leena!” She said, her voice constantly excited.
“Er I’m Chris” He said somewhat hesitantly. He laughed a little “Man this is a first, I’m actually talking to an otter” He sat down beside her, putting his hand close, to pet her. “Er, you are friendly right?” He asked.
“Careful. If you touch me...well, strange things happen.”
Upon hearing that, Chris pulled his hand back. “Oh sorry, I uh didn’t know” He replied, he coughed once before continuing. “So uh, you otters must really like it out here huh?”
“I love it! I don’t know how humans live in those stuffy boxes.”
Chris chuckled at hearing that “Oh believe me, I don’t understand either, and then five days in a row you go to another stuffy box where you work all day just so you can relax one or two days after, it’s so utterly… dull” He lamented.
“I couldn’t live like that!”
Chris smiled “Finally someone understands, heh, and nobody would ever believe this either” he laughed. “I’ve never talked with an otter before, but it’s really quite nice.”
“Say...I have a way that you wouldn’t have to go back to those boxes.” She said rather tentatively.
He smiled “Sure, I don’t really know what you can do, but I honestly would do anything for a break at this point.”
“Well. I’d make you like me.” She said. “But you could never go back. You’d live in the river forever.”
Chris gulped, but he put his hand to his chin and pondered for a moment, he had always been a social outcast, his parents weren’t around either, so what did he really have to lose. He gulped again, looking down at the otter. “Well uh, show me what you can do.” He answered, ready for anything.
Leena touched the exposed skin of his legs. “That.”
“Holy crap!” he shouted looking down at his leg, patches of fur began to grow where Leena had touched him. “How’d you do that?” He asked.
“Well...I’m cursed. Why do you think there are so many otters in this river?”
He rubbed the back of his head, still taking in just what happened. “It’s actually alright, I don’t mind as weird as that sounds” He answered, putting his hand on Leena’s head.
“Hehe. Careful. Look at your hand.”
He stared at his hand, a coat of fur came over it too, he watched as his fingernails pointed into claws, and a webbing formed between his fingers. “Oh wow, you don’t say.” He said, staring at his changed hand.
“You seem to be enjoying yourself Chris.” She said with a giggle.
He smiled, looking down at Leena. “I guess you could say I’ve been ready for a change for a while now, do your thing, call it a curse, I really don’t see how it is one.” He replied with a smile.
She clapped. “Okay! Let’s make it a game. You decide which part you want me to change next. Be warned...you will be able to talk like me...but other than that you will be very. Well, animal.”
Chris scratched his head thinking for a moment. “Well my left hand has never changed, and I’m sorta curious what it’s like to have a tail” He said, a bit of enthusiasm now in his voice.
“Silly, one step at a time Mr. Otter!”
“Alright alright, well how about my hand first” He answered
Leena reached up, and he lowered his hand. She took it in her paws and started to massage it.
Chris flexed his hand a bit, noticing how it changed to match his right otter paw. “Oh, try a tail next” He asked eagerly.
She giggled and darted behind him, grabbing his cheeks and kneading them with her paws until she felt them push back. “Ooookay. So I’m going to let you enjoy this. I bet the tail going through those silly pants will be fun!”
He grinned looking towards hi back end “Alright Leena, I’m ready.”
“What do you need me for! I started it. Now all you have to do is...well want it! The curse accelerates when it’s victims give in. You have a furry spot on your behind I’d wager. I wanna see you grow it yourself! Be creative!” She said playfully.
Chris smiled, rubbing at the base of his spine until he felt a lump, his pants ripped open as his new otter tail grew. “Oh yeah, that wasn’t hard at all.” He chuckled to himself.
Suddenly Leena grabbed onto both of his legs, hugging him tightly. “Oh I love your tail! It will be so useful for swimming!” She ripped his shoes open with her claws, and resumed rubbing his legs.
He stared down at himself, his feet completely reshaped into paws, and the fur had crawled its way all the way to his waist. “Heh, and you told me this was a curse Leena.” He replied, grinning at her.
“It has been to everyone that has changed so far. But you seem to enjoy it. So I guess it’s a blessing for you. How do you feel mentally right now? I imagine you’ve lost a bit of intelligence.”
He rubbed his head a bit, still smiling. “Lost a bit, before I thought I needed that hunk of junk to catch fish.” He pointed over to the fishing pole.
“What about those clothes!” She said in a disgusted voice. “What otter wears clothes!?”
He scratched at his shirt, feeling that he had grown a thick coat of fur underneath, even his arms were completely covered as well. “You are right, it’s been getting awfully warm” He took off his shirt, letting the wind blow through his new fur coat.
“Hehe!!! You are naked!” Leena said, before jumping into the water. At this point Christ stood there, on otter paws, covered in sleek, brown fur, with a long tail on the ground behind him. As Leena watched, his skin above the fur on his chest slowly darkened, then grew fuzzy, then, like a carpet pushing out, brown fur appeared. All that was left was his head. “Naked, naked, naked! What if a human saw you!!”
“Aww forget that.” He said, feeling the fur engulf his face. “Fur covers you better than clothes ever did.”
She decided to test his intellect. “Say...where did you do before coming here?”
Chris yawned, his face pushing out into an otter muzzle “One of those boring human boxes, you know the stuffy ones” He answered.
Leena laughed at the five foot otter. They needed to fix that too. Plus his ears, and his body shape was way too bulky. She patted the water. “Okay Mr. Otter, ready to come home now?”
“Yeah, like you said, the old place was just a stuffy box, silly human stuff.” He followed beside Leena, waiting for her to make her next move.
“You are so big!” She said, starting to swim around him. “Bet you can’t catch me!” With that, she shot off down the river.
Chris trailed after her, starting to shrink as he swam after her. “I’m coming, just you wait!” He called out enthusiastically.
She looked back at him. “With those bulky human ears!? And that ungainly body? As if!” She rubbed her own. “Otters are sleek...we can cut through the water as if it’s not there! But you! You are still holding on to that ugly body.” She taunted, and sped off.
“Oh yeah, I knew something was off.” He answered, he rubbed at his ears, they became rounded and smaller, like an otter’s, as his ears finished shifting, he finished shrinking down to otter size. “Sorry about that, wait up!” He called, swimming out towards Leena.
But she had disappeared through a hole in a wall ahead.
Chris darted up to the wall, where the female had disappeared to, He went through the wall coming into a strange room, the roof appeared to be made of sticks.
“Do you know what this is?” Leena said, slowly walking towards the new otter.
He rubbed his otter chin, staring towards Leena. “It’s home, it must be!” He answered eagerly, wagging his otter tail.
“It’s more than that...it’s a den. Our den. Do you know what a den is for, new otter?”
“Sleepy, resting, staying with your family? It just seems natural to me.” He answered.
“What would you say to...um...starting a holt with me?” She asked sheepishly.
“Heh, new life, new family, I can’t say no to that” He waved to her “How about we talk more over a nice swim” He said happily, eagerly eyeing the water.
Leena yawned. “How about we curl up and sleep.”
Chris padded over to her, laying down beside her “Sure thing, I’ll need someone to teach me to fish after all.” With that the two otters curled together, the warmth of their fur lulling them quickly to sleep.
