I agree with that, I myself am dominant bisexual, and I lean towards guys. But I hate this whole campaign against the rebel flag lately; it's disrespectful to people like me whose family never owned slaves, and fought for the south, and were senselessly pillaged by the yankees. Their women raped, men killed, and their property burned to the ground. We didn't do that to the yanks, because it's just disgusting and barbaric. The rebel flag is a reminder that our government once put their own citizens through near-genocide.
Hmm, weren't Southerners constantly raping enslaved women? Even if they did not own slaves themselves? It doesn't make war rape ok, but as a descendant of white southerners myself, I believe we should acknowledge our Euro-American ancestors' complicity in the oppression of the people of the African Diaspora. Unless your ancestors were actively saving people from slavery, I hope you take my words to heart.
The "confederate flag" wasn't created or used until after the Civil war was over. It is a symbol of anger, hatred and fear to all blacks and is so volatile in nature that Nazi groups use it in Germany as a stand in for the Nazi flag since the Nazi flag is banned in Germany. It needs to be burned.
Vulpes, two of those links are cite-able sources by any academic standards, and one is a broken link to nowhere. Also, NONE of this changes the fact that the flag stands for the subjugation and degradation of blacks and that it is used and seen widely as a symbol of hate.
I'm sorry, did black people enslave you? Did they take you from your mother? Did they rape your mother? Did they force other white people to rape her? Did black people forbid you to learn to read on pain of death? Did they treat you worse than a animal? Did they free you, only to burn down your churches, hang you, beat you? Did they refuse to provide you with goods a services because you are white? No? OK then.
If you have a problem with how SOME blacks treat whites, then maybe you ought to put yourself in our shoes and see how the world is from our point of view. You would be pretty effing angry and resentful if the race that oppressed you openly for 400 years now did it covertly and when you complained said you were full of shit. Just saying.

What do you mean "START things"? You mean complain when we get profiled shot for no damn reason other than the color of our skin. Sorry we scare the shit out of you band you can't control your trigger finger. By the way, WE didn't do anything to deserve being treated like less than human beings! Why in the HELL would we "take someone else's side"?! No one EVER takes our side. No one ever stands up for us. Everything we have we had to accomplish ourselves, so don't you DARE condescend to blacks like WE are the problem. Whites created the problem all on their own. Blacks aren't the problem. People like you who try to make a victimized people feel guilty for resenting their oppressors are the problem.
PS: This isn't a war. This is a problem you created and would rather ignore or forget than fix.

Also, no, this doesn't end racism. As long as ignorance and hatred lives in the hearts of man, racism will always be, but that doesnt make it ok to let the Confederate flag wave at full mast when the American flag is at half mast because one bigot shot up a black church that has been burned down in the past out of hatred and fear by ignorant, hateful people.
That flag is heritage to me and always will be. Like anything in the world, anything can become a symbol of hate. Even a Buddhist religious symbol by tilting it slightly to the left. Messages are only as powerful as the meaning that we give behind them, and if those messages speak of hatred then that is what it become associated with. Taking down a flag isn't going to stop the hate. It will forever change the meaning forever of what the flag represents by the messages we now associate with something that never were.
WHERE do you see the Union Jack being flown in America? Of course its flown in Europe! Britain is still a country! Are you being serious right now? The confederacy is gone. There is no more use for that flag other than a symbol of hatred. If you support it, it means you support ALL of what it stands for, and arent worth the attention or breath.
Yeah, you see people with other countries flags, because they are from that country or have heritage in that country. The Confederacy isn't a country. It was a bunch of idiots so desperate to live backwards that they we're willing to rip the country apart. Bait someone? Please you don't need to be baited. Every word from you is laced with ignorance and bigotry. I don't need to be anonymous. I'm not the one showing their inner racist.

Side note, I'm heartily convinced this piece is more about recent events transpiring then just the extrapolation from those above.
Now, correct me if I am wrong but the piece appears to more represent the close proximity of the Supreme Court's rulings over Gay Marriage and other rights not afforded to homosexuals in the United States and the long argued for removal of the Confederate Flag from public offices and places of governance in the southern United States. It seems to me more of a 'this happened in this time', rather then an 'out with the old, in with the new' or 'racism is dead, yay equality' kind of message.
I like this piece, though, even if it's got fairly modest composition technique. I have a weak spot for 'observation of the times' kinds of art.

First, if your great great grandfather didn't fight in the war, it's not your heritage. SECOND, the Holocaust is over, but Germans don't fly the Nazi flag as part of their "heritage". Its banned, because what it stands for is the suffering and oppression of others, same with the rebel flag. Third, I am older than you and my family has lived in the south long enough to REMEMBER slavery. My great grand mother was the daughter of a slave. YOU might be OK with forgetting it because it was in the past, but that's because your family was never enslaved, so you don't get to speak for all Southerners. All you bring is a bunch of weak arguments to make excuses so you can keep appropriating a symbol of inequality, terrorism, and oppression, not to mention treason since the south basically said "We dont want to be Americans anymore if we can't keep forcing others to do our work for us." The south is a big fat mess. They have the worst school systems, the most oppressive laws, and have most, if not all of the poorest states in the union.
PS: MOST ELECTRONICS GET SHIPPED TO CALIFORNIA, not the south....you know...China.
..Japan....yeah....straight shot across the Pacific. You guys get stuff from India, south America, and Africa...and even if you did get most imports, which you don't, your geographical location and your culture of stupidity aren't the same thing. I'm pretty sure the southern part of America was there long before Europeans showed up, so don't even try to take credit for geography. Ooooo. You built a port. Nice....same ones that took slaves.
Bottom line: Stop pulling crap out of your butt to explain why that flag is OK. Its not. The south romanticized it and not it might as well be a part of southern pop culture. You have absolutely no ties to that flag, he'll, you weren't even born when that flag was created. You didn't fight for what it stood for, you didn't use it for what it was used for later...unless you've been burning those black churches lately and placing the flag in their yards. To blacks that flag might as well be the ISIS flag for all the pain and needless suffering it represents, and your defence of it proves that you care more about a piece of cloth than the collective fear and anger it inspires in your fellow human beings.

My ancestors DID fight in the civil war. Even if they didn't , its still a part of southern history, which anyone from the south can feel a part of.
The constant allusions to the nazi flag are stupid. The nazis were a political party that sought global conquest. The confederates were not remotely comparable to them. The confederacy and the US both had slavery at the same time, so getting outraged about the confederate flag being shown while feeling pride toward the US flag is hypocrisy at best. So is the treason charge, since the US committed treason to be born, and did plenty of inequality, terrorism and oppression of various groups.
The south could improve, though so could the rest of the country. Education wise, Mississippi is the worst state, but California is second worst. States like texas, florida and north carolina are middle ranked. Laws here in the south are not any more oppressive than other parts of the country. The cost of living is also much lower int he south, you can make a decent living off 50,000 dollars a year in most of the south.
Actually the south gets a fair amount of imports. Ports like new orleans and houston,as well as miami are major ports. There is no "culture of stupidity" in the south, either. We have advanced technology here as well. The space program has mission control (houston , texas), launching site ( frlorida) and testing and training centers ( huntsville, alabama) in the south, which means most of america's rocket scientists are also from the south or living here.
Bottom line: if you are not from the south or currently living here, shut the fuck up about a flag that doesn't affect you in any way. Any flag can be offensive to someone somewhere. Southerners should get to define what the flag means, not others.People have a right to be offended, but not to silence others because they feel that way.

If your ancestors faught for the Confederacy, they we're trators to their country and rebels. Of course you don't think the rebel flag is akin to the nazi flag. Your ancestors we're the germans, not the Jews. Its easy as he'll for someone who's family weren't slaves to be just fine with what the confederacy stood for.
Wow, you are an idiot. You have technology, huh? NASA, huh? You do realize that the ONLY reason mission control is in Texas and Florida is because it has optimum weather windows for launches. Do you REALLY think mission control is run by a bunch of Texans and Floridians? Please, do us a favor and stop talking. You are making yourself look ignorant.
Also, living in the south is not the same as being southern. You don't get to claim intelligent people just because they have the misfortune of living in your state to be near their jobs.
Hmmmm....I grew up in the south....soooo...I guess that means I can say whatever the fuck I want to about it. The ignorant don't get to set the rules. If that we're the case your backwards butt would probably still own slaves.
How about you leave the decisions to people with actual brains.

No, my ancestors were not traitors, they fought to defend their country from an invasion. The south voted to leave a union they voluntarily entered into, thats different than just firing on the legal government like in the american revolution. No sane thinking person would think the confederate flag was akin to the nazi flag, most of the atrocities of slavery were commited under the US flag, not the confederate flag, and certainly not the battle flag.
Yes, I know part of why NASA was put here was because it is closer to the equator and has better weather, but thats not the only reason why mission control and launching was put here, hawaii is further south than florida after all. And considering that I live about 10 miles form mission control in houston I can tell you that YES, mission control is in fact run by a a lot of texans. Not just people living in texas, but people born in texas. The administrator of NASA, Charlie Bolden, was born in t South Carolina. So yes, we southerners run NASA. We also had a big hand in the manhattan project, oak ridge Tennessee was a big part in that. Southerners also invented the microscope (J. Lawrence Smith of Louisiana), the submarine ( Horace Lawson Hunley of Tennessee), and the microchip (Jack kilby). So no, we are not just a bunch of dumb yokels, and its ignorant to assume that.
People from the south can be smart, some of them very much so, the north hardly has a lock on intelligence. Most of the "southerners are dumb" stereotype comes form the 1930s and is horribly out of date.
I also grew up in the south, and I still live here. It depends on when you left both year wise and age wise. Leaving when you were 3 or 4 doesn't give you much to go on, memory is spotty at best, leaving as a teen would be different. And leaving in the 1970s would be much different than leaving in the 1990s or 2000s. one also has to define ignorant. I, by nature of living in the south, cannot be ignorant of what its like here since I live here. And no, my family not only never owned slaves, they never wanted to if the diaries left behind were any indication. Not everyone in the south owned slaves.
I have an actual brain, i'm college educated, so I guess that means I should get to make decisions then.

Your ancestors are traitors and tried to top this country apart because they we're too lazy to pick their own damn cotton. You can sugar coat it all you like, but no one ia buying what you are selling.
Hawaii is an isolated island chain. No one is going to put anything on an island in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
You can fight all you like to tell people southernes are smart, but nothing you do proves it and no one believes it. Southerners are a joke.
Dear. I am 27 years old. I spent half my life in the south, and half in the north.
I left when i was a teen...in....2000....so according to your own perameters, I have every right to say what i please about the South. The south sucks. Its full of racist rednecks, poorly educated individuals, sucky school aystems, and backward politicans.
Also, i love how you speak on behalf of all southerners. Thats so cute, like you know all about the south. You live in a state where the only intelligent people are in Austin. Blah to that whole state.
Sorry dear, a college education doesn't give you the right to spout your romanticized nonsense. I'm college educated, and I assure you my grades we're better, but as you can see, I'm not claiming I have the right to make any decisions.
The decision has already been made. The flag is out. The flag is offensive to 80% + of the US population, your love for it doesn't make it less offensive, it makes you look more ignorant.

To be traitors they would have needed to betray the confederacy. Since they didn't, they weren't. My ancestors also didn't own slaves and didn't grow cotton.
Florida is a swamp, yet they put the launch facility there. Also, there was no problem buildings pearl harbor on that island chain.
Making a broad sweeping stereotypical statement like southerners are all dumb is pretty ignorant. There are plenty of smart southerners and plenty of dumb ones, just like anywhere else.
I am 26, and have been living here for much of my life. I have been to new york, massachusetts, california andhawaii, as well as a few other states not in the south. they are not much better or worse than we are in terms of standard of living. Its not liek we live in dirt floor houses with outhouses here.
I don't speak on behalf of all southerners, just as a southerner. That said, I have been to every state in the south and lived in 5 states here (arkansas, texas, lousisiana, georgia and florida), and no, there are plenty of smart people outside of austin, i've been to austin and it has its own type of dumb as well.
How can you assume you're grades were better when you have no idea what i was studying? It comes off as arrogant. And no, my grades were quite good. You seem to have this notion all southerners are uneducated, being college educated dispels that. Having a college degree makes no one irrefutably right.
Uh, actually: http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/02/polit.....outhern-pride/
The only places where you will get 80 percent seeing it as offensive are college campuses and hyper liberal cities. The flag will stick around, just as its done for the past 100 plus years. Sure, it may go off government buildings, which is fine, but not from the general population.

God, stop being stupid, please. Its easier to build in a swamp than in the middle of the ocean. Thats not even an accurate comparison, and yeah they built The military base at Pearl harbor... because it was strategically advantageous for launching strikes against Japan and China. Geez....are you SURE you are college educated, because nothing you saybia screaming "educated" to me.
Hey idiot. Your area of study doesn't correlate to what kind of grades you got. Yeah....you've never even seen the inside of a college.
Mmmmhmmm thought you we're a republican. Please. I wish you and all conservatives would just go live on an island. Donald Trump could buy it.

Hawaii is a volcanic island, not in the middle of the ocean. It would not have been hard to build a rocket launch facility in Hawaii. There was a lot more scientific knowledge in the south than hawaii though, which might have played a role.
Because you said "I'm sure my grades were higher than yours" itself an arrogant statement, but if you had a different major you took different classes which would have affected the GPA. A liberal arts major is a lot easier than my major, computer science.
While I do tend to vote republican, I don't agree with all of the party's platform. Both parties have a lot wrong with them. And no,I would not vote for trump.

Bottom line: The Confederate flag is out. Its seen as offensive by most of the country, and the ones that don't think it's offensive don't have a voice, and even if they did, no one is listening. It will be banned from all government complexes in the next 10 years, and 50 years from now, the next generation won't even remember what it looked like.
Deal with it.
Deal with it.
I don't see the flag going anywhere. Yes, it will be removed from government buildings, but it should never have been put there to begin with. About 70 percent of southerners don't think its offensive, and they do have a voice and a say. Most of the people who use the flag and respect it are not racist and are not part of racist groups. If we haven't forgotten the flag in the 150 years since the civil war, its highly unlikely we will forget it in the next 50. If anything it may become more popular by that time since it will be the 200th anniversary of the civil war.
You call me racist while blaming blacks for the shitty lives we endure because of the 400 years of oppression forced on us that still occurs to this very day, but why bother explaining anything to you. Its obvious that you are an ignorant hick grandstanding for a history of suffering. You don't care about anyone but yourself.
Blacks don't have shitty lives because of 400 years of oppression.Every group, at some point in history, has been oppressed by someone. EVERY. ONE. Black people in the US are not unique or special in this regard.
I know plenty of successful black people who own businesses and have nice houses and nice cars and live happy lives. Black people who have shitty lives have shitty lives because they made shitty choices, just like white people with shitty lives. They drop out of high school, they develop drug habits, they have unprotected sex and get pregnant before they can afford a baby (usually unmarried to boot), they get into gangs or crime, then because of these factors, they can't get a decent job and are stuck working at wal-mart or mcdonalds into their 40s. Then what do they do? Instead of taking responsibility for their choices and trying to change it, they blame white people. And because they can't accept blame, they pass down the habits to another generation which repeats the cycle.

Ah the old "shut up, you don't understand" response. you do know I grew up in an area that was 70 percent black right? i saw plenty of black business owners and fairly wealthy black people, I also saw ones slide into poverty. The ones that slid into poverty usually did so because of choices they made. Racism still exists, to be sure, but acting like its the only reason there is poverty in the black community and that its therefore all white peoples fault and black people have to do nothing to fix it is actually the kind of thinking that causes the problems between blacks and whites.
Dear. Blacks have a saying. We have to work twice as hard for half as much. Knowing that, can you blame Blacks for giving up? If you are born poor, the likelihood you will stay poor is high. If your parents are uneducated, chances are good that you will be too. You don't even realize how much effort Blacks have to put in just to survive, and you don't care. Oh, you lived in a community of black people and it had black shop owners? I can't IMAGINE how that happened. Idiot. You need to understand that Blacks have only been free from slavery for 140 years, have only been considered citizens of the US since 1912, have only been able to get proper education for about one complete generation, and are only now taking positions of power to try to change the systemic poverty and violence in black society that is a direct result of the oppression of whites. Get.....a.....clue. You can't take away an entire group of peoples humanity for 400 year and expect them to gain it back and be your equal in less than 150.
Yes, yes I can blame them for giving up. My family was not well off either, yet I didn't drop out of HS, or get into drugs or join a gang or commit crimes. Those would have been personal choices that would have harmed my life. Neither of my parents had a college degree and only one graduated high school, i was the first to go to college.
Black shop and business owners usually went to college and were much better off. My boss at the last company I worked for was a black guy with a masters degree, and a very high standard of living. He probably didn't get here by crying about racism all the time. Many of the same problems that affect poor white people are the same as those that affect poor black people. Because I came form the former, I have some isight on the latter.
yes, the black population had been free of slavery for 150 or so years. Thats a long time. Black people were granted citizenship with the 14th amendment in 1868. Most people didn't get beyond a high school education until the 1960s. You do realize systemic poverty and violence are not exclusive to black people, right? I wonder what caused it in their case, probably similar to the things i mentioned. Blaming whites for all the ills of black society is part of the problem, not the solution.

Considering if not for whites, there wouldnt BE any blacks here today....gotta say....yeah...blacks can blame whites. They created the situation, inflamed it, then ignored it and procced to blame the victims for circumstances beyond their control.
The poorest white is better off than any black person any day, because no matter how poor you are, no one is going to shoot you or arrest you because of the way you look.

I wouldn't say there would be no blacks in the US , we do have some immigrants form ghana and nigeria and south africa that came over more recently. Whites more or less fell into the situation, couldn't give it up, then forced themselves to and made sure no one else did it either. However, oppression and discrimination are not excuses in and of themselves, other groups have managed to become successful even after undergoing discrimination, like jews and asians.
Most black people are shot by other black people, not white people. And people are normally arrested for committing a crime, correlation is not causation.

I think a compromise would be better.

As a gay guy, rainbow doesn't bother me, but as a southerner I hate seeing the flag of the south disrespected.

No one has to care, being offended doesn't necessitate action. That being said, just because you're offended that doesn't necessitate action either. Your offense means no more than mine. If I choose to respect or fly the flag, no one has any right to infringe upon it. Many fly it because they are proud to be southerners, not because they are racist. Of course, part of the reason some fly the flag is as a middle finger to anyone with the idea that Southerners don't matter, that we should just shut up and let other people tell us what to do because they know better (they don't). Bigotry and hatred toward southerners is the last acceptable type of prejudice in america and until it goes away, neither will the flags
Actually the vocal minority is against the flag.

57 percent said it’s a symbol of Southern pride, 33 percent called it more a symbol of racism and 5 percent said it’s both equally.
And that was a national survey, in the south, the number that thinks it s southern pride is more like 70 percent.

Basically there are 5 reasons people fly the confederate flag.
1. Southern heritage, they had an ancestor who fought for the confederacy and want to honor them.
2.Southern pride
3. symbol of rebellion against authority
4. middle finger aka "u mad bro?"
5. racist hate groups.
Problem is that liberals assume everyone that flies the confederate battle flag in in group 5, when only a small portion of those that fly the flag actually are. The vast, overwhelming proportion are in groups 2, 3 and 4, and while many claim to be in group 1, few actually are flying it for that reason. However, all but group 5 are ok reasons to fly it.

Most are 2 or 4, 2 is more common in the south, 4 is more common in the north and west. 3 is common among teens/young people. 1 and 5 are the least common, civil war re-enactors and groups like sons of confederate veterans are in group 1. groups like the KKK and neo nazis are in group 5. On both the number is in the thousands nation wide.
