I agree with that, I myself am dominant bisexual, and I lean towards guys. But I hate this whole campaign against the rebel flag lately; it's disrespectful to people like me whose family never owned slaves, and fought for the south, and were senselessly pillaged by the yankees. Not all of them were. Hence why I mentioned that my family didn't own slaves. They were middle class farmers and although I don't know for sure, I wouldn't doubt some of them may have helped slaves escape.

The "confederate flag" wasn't created or used until after the Civil war was over. It is a symbol of anger, hatred and fear to all blacks and is so volatile in nature that Nazi groups use it in Germany as a stand in for the Nazi flag since the Nazi flag is banned in Germany. It needs to be burned.

The "Confederate Battle Flag" was flown in 1861 and used during the Civil War. The "Confederate States Flag" was different from their battle flag during that time. :)

That flag is heritage to me and always will be. Like anything in the world, anything can become a symbol of hate. Even a Buddhist religious symbol by tilting it slightly to the left. Messages are only as powerful as the meaning that we give behind them, and if those messages speak of hatred then that is what it become associated with. Taking down a flag isn't going to stop the hate. It will forever change the meaning forever of what the flag represents by the messages we now associate with something that never were.

The british flag flies in other places in the US, usually as a historical display, like in the five flags of florida for instance. The hawaiians chose the random flag of another country and made it theirs, and it stuck. Which is kind of like the battle flag.

Now, correct me if I am wrong but the piece appears to more represent the close proximity of the Supreme Court's rulings over Gay Marriage and other rights not afforded to homosexuals in the United States and the long argued for removal of the Confederate Flag from public offices and places of governance in the southern United States. It seems to me more of a 'this happened in this time', rather then an 'out with the old, in with the new' or 'racism is dead, yay equality' kind of message.

I like this piece, though, even if it's got fairly modest composition technique. I have a weak spot for 'observation of the times' kinds of art.

First, if your great great grandfather didn't fight in the war, it's not your heritage. SECOND, the Holocaust is over, but Germans don't fly the Nazi flag as part of their "heritage". Third, I am older than you and my family has lived in the south long enough to REMEMBER slavery. My great grand mother was the daughter of a slave. The constant allusions to the nazi flag are stupid. The nazis were a political party that sought global conquest. The confederates were not remotely comparable to them. The confederacy and the US both had slavery at the same time, so getting outraged about the confederate flag being shown while feeling pride toward the US flag is hypocrisy at best. So is the treason charge, since the US committed treason to be born, and did plenty of inequality, terrorism and oppression of various groups.

The south could improve, though so could the rest of the country. Education wise, Mississippi is the worst state, but California is second worst. States like texas, florida and north carolina are middle ranked. Laws here in the south are not any more oppressive than other parts of the country. The cost of living is also much lower int he south, you can make a decent living off 50,000 dollars a year in most of the south.

Actually the south gets a fair amount of imports. Ports like new orleans and houston,as well as miami are major ports. There is no "culture of stupidity" in the south, either. We have advanced technology here as well. The space program has mission control (houston , texas), launching site ( frlorida) and testing and training centers ( huntsville, alabama) in the south, which means most of america's rocket scientists are also from the south or living here.

Hawaii is a volcanic island, not in the middle of the ocean. It would not have been hard to build a rocket launch facility in Hawaii. There was a lot more scientific knowledge in the south than hawaii though, which might have played a role.

Bottom line: The Confederate flag is out. Its seen as offensive by most of the country, and the ones that don't think it's offensive don't have a voice, and even if they did, no one is listening. I don't see the flag going anywhere. Yes, it will be removed from government buildings, but it should never have been put there to begin with. About 70 percent of southerners don't think its offensive, and they do have a voice and a say. Most of the people who use the flag and respect it are not racist and are not part of racist groups. If we haven't forgotten the flag in the 150 years since the civil war, its highly unlikely we will forget it in the next 50. If anything it may become more popular by that time since it will be the 200th anniversary of the civil war.

Thats not entirely true. If enough people get offended and want to, say, ban the flag, it still won't be legal because of the first amendment. Also a majority of americans are not offended by the flag, its a vocal minority.

Basically there are 5 reasons people fly the confederate flag.
1. Southern heritage, they had an ancestor who fought for the confederacy and want to honor them.
2.Southern pride
3. symbol of rebellion against authority
4. middle finger aka "u mad bro?"
5. racist hate groups.

Problem is that liberals assume everyone that flies the confederate battle flag in in group 5, when only a small portion of those that fly the flag actually are. The vast, overwhelming proportion are in groups 2, 3 and 4, and while many claim to be in group 1, few actually are flying it for that reason. However, all but group 5 are ok reasons to fly it.

Most are 2 or 4, 2 is more common in the south, 4 is more common in the north and west. 3 is common among teens/young people. 1 and 5 are the least common, civil war re-enactors and groups like sons of confederate veterans are in group 1. groups like the KKK and neo nazis are in group 5. The battle flag is that its always going to be there in some form. And over time its meaning will change. Southerners are persistent, the meaning of the flag has changed several times in the past and likely will in the future.

I am aware of the Bonnie blue flag that bares a single star. It is a fine flag, but it’s seen more as a sucessiinst symbol than a symbol of the South. Still, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.
