Imagine of RPG game full of anthropomorphic character as main character, adventuring around the world full of people of various races?
Breath of fire 1-2 is that game.
3-4 do have furry characters too, but the number is decreases and the character are more "humanize" design than the first and second BOF.
1 and 2 is on SNES
3 and 4 is on PS1(And portable version of 3 was releases on PSP as well)
Forget about 5, it loses all of its charm and became the end of the franchise.

I've actually played 5, it was a weird game. Just didn't really feel like a Breath of Fire game and was maybe a bit too experimental. That and the fact that you were given a time limit to complete the game that would actually kill you if it ran out kinda ruined it for most people who tried to give the game a chance. For the most part it only ran out if you were excessively careless but the simple inclusion of a time limit like that just makes things too tense and makes you second guess every single action and path you took.
It's a shame too, the game actually did have some interesting combat mechanics and ideas, maybe if they hadn't made it a Breath of Fire game it wouldn't have damaged the franchise so much.

Yeah, In fact I love the combat system itself, but the major reason I really dislike about BOF5 is
1. No anthropomorphic characters anymore. this is the major reason that make BOF5 not worth using BOF name at all, only thing that's relate to the old franchise was (corpse of)dragon and character with similar name, but ultimately it turn from Fantasy world RPG into Sci-fi Survival Strategy RPG.
2. Nina in BOF5 is so disgusting, Princess of Windia became an experiment object, unable to speak, more and more
3. D-Ratio and save token, the thing that kill all the fun in this game. I know some people love challenge game but BOF used to be an RPG game, which gave the player freedom to explore anything, leveling up, finding treasure and fishing, but with D-ratio and limited save token, this game became survival game in an instant.
4. Extremely difficult level design, Every each fight is so damn hard and exhausted because Ryu is the only one who can be a tanker but enemy spawns like at least 3-6 of them at once, Ryu keep dying fast in the frontline and girls can't stand much damage either, not to mention D-ratio keep rising when you laze around, slim chance to leveling up the character without risking being gameover later.
5. With limited time/ limited number of saving the game and difficulty matter, it ruins the potential of how exciting the combat system is. No time to waste means less time to enjoy the game/overcome the difficulty by leveling up as well.

Yeah that about sums it up. By the way what were feelings on Breath of Fire 6? Were you as confused and outraged as I was? Cause yeah I was outraged by it and all I could think was "cancelling Mega Man Legends 3 wasn't enough Capcom? You have to rape my memory of BoF with this hideous abomination?!"
Since the franchise itself is dead long ago, I have no comment about the 6th BOF.
Maybe it is better to leave it as a fallen legend, or maybe it is better to see it rise once again even though it was never be the same BOF we ever know, It's up to what point of view you are.
But all I can say is it looks more like BOF than the 5th for sure.
