it just suck cause no matter HOW much you doctor up your computer, there's always someone somewhere that will push the limits of the internet and the moderators won't ALWAYS be there to catch it...
She's 10, already knows who Pedobear is, already seen a couple of adult animes mixed in with her Naruto Shippuden and Lucky Star.

unfortunately, these days most grade schoolers can circumvent "net nanny" programs with a few keystrokes and a Google search. "Net Nanny" is marketed to parents with the implied promise of keeping the big bad internet away from your kids... it's a paper tiger at best. open communication with ones kids is much more effective, i realize this is predicated on a preexisting background of mutual trust, which i admit isn't always there when uninformed parents try tyrannical control of their kids lives whenever they hear 'horror stories' on tabloid news programs geared to create fear...
in case anyone was wondering, i have two kids, and they are verry active online. they are also not naive, they know exactly what's out there and we trust them. the running commentary they have while surfing the net can have you in stitches! we respect their privacy and they know this.

Well, she's 10, and a big anime freak. She's even memorized both the hari hari yuki and lucky star dances in both english and japanese.
When she found out about the furries, and say how much fun the cons are via YouTube, she immediately wanted to try out a fursona and try her hand at it

ok then picture it
That scene plays out while I'm in the kitchen, Nats turns around to Susan and asks "what's that word mean??"
Susan thinks for a sec and says "tell you what go to the computer and look up the online dictionary and that'll tell you what it means!!"
I hear her scamper off and peer around the corner..
"You realize you just told my daughter, to go to the internet, to look up what masturbating means, right?"
Not but a second later does Susan's smug face get wiped down into pure horror, and we hear a very resounding "WOAH!!!!" come out of the back room..
We rush in there falling over ourselves to turn off the monitor, but the sound is still going! And we just unplug the computer altogether, to Hell with whatever data is lost!
not one of the most well thought out ideas, nope

Dear... I don't really know who's name to half-heartedly invoke here. I just wonder if this flood of stupid people is karma for the United States practicing eugenics until the sixties? (And yes, we did. Just never on the same scale or with the same level of inhumanity as the Nazis.)
But seriously, find something to do with your kid, keep her away from the twisted bowels of the internet... Preserving our country's future is everyone's responsiblity. /witty, feel-good message

Maybe I'm having a hard time understand this ... where WAS she where they'd ask her to put a shoe on her head?? Sorry, maybe I'm thick here, but all I keep thinking is a rabbit with a pancake on its head ...
Though I just read your reply to
dorian -- was there that much of a danger?
And hopefully she'd know better than to do anything else!!!

Heh...the rabbit you refer to was Oolong (named after a type of tea) and according to Wikipedia, the pancake was actually a dorayaki which (again, more use of Wikipedia) is two pancake-like patties made from kasutera (a Japanese sponge cake) sealed around a filling of sweet red bean paste. Oolong apparently died in 2003 and the owner has a new rabbit named Yuebing which is apparently the Chinese name for mooncakes.

Hmmm...now I'm hungry. Oh, and I know about Oolong because when I was RPing my bunny character explaining something, someone once gave her a blank look then stuck a pancake on her head. Wikipedia is my friend.
(^.^)
As for the potential danger with the webcam chat...well, it's not so much that they got her to put a shoe on her head - that much is innocent enough by itself. If I understand his parental concern, the main issue is that the people on the other end of the net included members of 4chan's less savory patrons. It's not that everyone in the chat was bad, but if there was even one bad person there...well, sometimes it only takes one to screw everything up, and the risk factor IS higher with that group. If nothing else, someone in chat might post a link to some particularly disturbing porn. I think we've all clicked on links we wished afterwards that we hadn't, yes? Best to at least TRY to spare her for a few more years.

It's so damned funny that you mentioned dorayaki -- I just bought 2 packages of 2 different flavors of those today!!
Appreciate the heads-up on the pancake thing! That's a great story! :-D
And as a parent, I have to agree with you. Best to keep webcams and chat software away from budding young adults altogether!
