Endless Realms bestiary - Barghest
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Along with needing me to come up with monsters to populate dungeons and caverns, the art director also needed me to come up with a few undead. While not typically considered an undead creature, the traditional lore behind the doglike barghests has always been associated with death, reminding me quite a bit of banshees, actually, their appearance heralding death to come, and sounding with a great chorus of baying death that has passed. They can turn invisible, but are always betrayed by the sound of dragging chains.
I was with a group of friends once, exploring a creepy industrial area one night, when suddenly we swore we could smell sulphur. Immediately after, we spotted a massive, black mastiff lurking in the shadows at the side of the road, its fur seeming to reflect no light, and whose eyes glowed red. It was probably just a stray, and the eyes a product of our headlights shining in them, but we all saw it - no one died, though :V

Thank you very much, glad you think so! I think normally they aren't considered undead, just sorta horrible monsters, but I felt with their strong association with death-to-come and death-that-has-passed in classic lore, being undead (or having strong undead elements) kinda made sense.
This is what I would call a hell hound. Like the ones spotted in the open fields around the farmland in the UK. Although this is clearly of your imagination. It's clear from the image that you know your way around anatomy. The muscles and ligaments look great and run together nicely. I could imagine something like this coming up say when a king of some castle is getting married and the chains intermix with the bells. A start of an adventure, or something in the middle.
Random question of the day. Would these be the lap dogs of death since they go somewhat hand in hand together?

*nods* It is definitely taken from the classic "hell hound" or "black dog" that tends to show up in England - you can see the original sketch concept that I did for it is much more a regular monstrous dog rather than a demonic/goblinoid but slightly less canine creature like this fellow. The anatomy bits rang a bell, but I definitely looked up some references - I'm usually pretty loose when it comes to stuff for the game, I don't worry too much if things are 100% exactly the way they should be in real life, but I still wanted them to look convincing.
That's a pretty cool mental scene. And yeah, it would make a pretty fun part of an RPG! You must run fun games :3
*chuckles* Maybe! Haha, would make a kind of sense, for sure :b
