A few hours later the team was home and just finishing up their debriefing with the General. Nothing was found on the planet but a single marble. It was still unknown how the blue sun’s radiation could have affected the DHD and cause it to dial the last number. After more testing by the team, nothing had been found. Once they had finished, the team would sent back home to Earth to enjoy its bright sunny days and cool beautiful nights for a bit of downtime.
“Anything else you all want to report?” The general asked, closing his folder on the table and standing up.
“The only thing I didn't mention was that I found the rookie’s marble.” Kitty said, taking the marble out of her pocket. She loved the little thing but was unsure why. The beautiful blue marble with millions of little light fractions in the middle seemed to fit just right in her paw. Kitty stood, holding her arm out to the general, showing the marble.
“We’ll let him know. Otherwise meeting adjourned. I don't wanna see you four back here for at least a week. You’re long overdue for leave.” With that the General walked out of the room, shutting the door to his office and the blades to his window, knowing exactly what the team was going to do and turning a blind eye to it.
The team gave a huge hurrah as they jumped out of their chairs, excited for their leave and ready for some much needed rest and relaxation. Zhai grabbed Kitty and gave her a breath stealing kiss, uncaring who saw. Kitty felt the marble go warm in her hand. She should be getting it tested for radiation or energy from the blue sun, anything to explain the bizarre lights in the cave, but she loved the marble and didn't want to give it up to a bunch of egg heads that would end up breaking the beautiful work of art. “Hey boys, I gotta make a stop before we leave. As excited as I am to see the cubs we have to give the marble back to the rookie.” Kitty pushed on Zhai’s arms and wiggled, “Put me down cave man, I gotta go find the rookie. You 3 PACK! I want our bags ready for the ride home by time i get back! Ill change later.” Zhai put Kitty down and watched her gallup out of the room. Hands on hips he walked to his locker and got out his casual clothes, laughing and chatting with his companions as he waited for her return. then followed Corin and Cass out of the room to their quarters to tidy up their bunks.
Wandering from room to room, Kitty searched out the Rookie. After checking the laundry facility, the Mess Hall, and even the hospital wing, Kitty was about to give up but decided to make her way down two levels to the second level sleeping quarters and common rooms. She stopped to ask several people if they had seen the rookie but no one had. Feeling frustrated she entered the last common room which contained a small library and chess board. Low and behold, there he was sitting in the corner, reading a horror novel that had a picture of a woman running from a masked man on the cover. Shaking her head at his choice of books she walked across the room to him. “Hey rookie, I've been looking for you.” He didn't respond at all and gave no sign he was even aware of her presence. “Rookie!” Kitty said louder while nudging his foot.
The rookie jumped out of his skin, dropping the book on the floor as he stood up. He quickly ripped the ear buds out of his ears and stumbled over an apology. “Sss...sorry Ma’am. I didn't realize I was summoned.” He tried to grab his book, but fumbled and dropped it on the ground again.
“I think you need to lay off the horror stories, rookie. And I didn't come here to put you to work. I came to give you this.” Kitty held out her arm and slowly opened her paw, revealing the blue marble. Kitty looked at the marble and frowned. “It’s a beautiful marble. I will admit, I’m very fond of it. Like holding a piece of ice that will never melt.” Kitty gave a shy laugh as she held her arm closer to the rookie.
“Oh! My grandfather's marble. I figured it was lost for good.” He picked up the marble and looked at it. “It’s funny, I dont even know why I took it with me. It’s usually just in a box at home. It’s never really been a prized possession. My grandfather told me that one day the marble would mean the world to me, or anyone who may come to love it. A beautiful piece with old folk lore attached is all it is.” The rookie considered the marble for another moment before offering the marble back. “I think you like it more than I ever did, to me it’s just a marble. Maybe you will find out what my grandfather meant.” The rookie shrugged then sat back down with his book, popping his ear buds back in place.
Kitty just stared at the marble, her eyes growing big in excitement. The blue orb that reminded her of ice and crystals was hers? “Are you sure?” Kitty asked, but the rookie just nodded absently before opening his book and getting lost in the pages again. “Thank you!” Happiness seemed to bubble over as she gave a little mew of joy and ran out of the room, her tail high and waving. She quickly ran back to her team, surprising them as she ran in and jumped from bed to bed. “I can keep it!” She called out before jumping on Zhai’s back between his wings, throwing her arms around his neck and holding out her open paw containing the marble.
“You and your silly treasures. I swear if it shines and sparkles and fits in your pocket you want to take it home!” Zhai sighed as he rubbed his forehead along her cheek.
“Hey, I think the kids would love it. And it really is beautiful.” She said as she wrapped her legs around his waist and sat up, keeping her balance with one hand on his shoulder while holding the marble in the other. “Let’s head home, I can’t wait to show them!”
They laughed as they all headed out into the hall, uncaring of the looks they got. The team had light hearts and were happy to spend some time outside the concrete compound as they piled into their vehicle for the trip home. The road home seemed longer, the black top going on and on. Miles ran into miles as the group waited to arrive, the impatience making them grumpy. As tempers flared, the marble in Kitty’s hand would grow warm and the team would hush and relax as the feelings of happiness and excitement pushed all negativity away. Cass talked about picnics on the beach and deep sea diving. Corin wanted nothing more than to run through the fields behind their home. In the front seat Kitty and Zhai sat quietly holding paws on the center console. They only had two thoughts on their minds. Two little cubs.
The sun was just rising as they pulled into the drive. Zhai laid on the horn. The huge sound filling the morning silence. He parked the car by the garage and got out to stretch his legs, Kitty, Cass, and Corin right behind him. Kitty popped the trunk and got out their bag before heading to the front door. As she neared it, the door banged open and two little fluffs ran out. Their beautiful light blue coats were speckled with spots that shimmered in the morning sun, their tails matched their mother's and waved high behind them, and their fur had small, beautiful feathers speckled along their spines and behind their ears. The little boy ran on all fours, wings spread wide, but unable to fly yet. He used his front talons and back paws to grip the pathway. The little girl was slightly older than her brother and used her mini versions of her father's wings to fly high and over her brother, landing in his arms as the little boy jumped into his mother's arms and they hugged each other.
“My darling little cubs! I’ve missed you so much!” Kitty kissed Archer, the little boy, all over his muzzle then checked him over for any booboos she had to make better. Zhai passed Kayley, the little girl, to Kitty and took their bags into the house while she kissed the little girl all over. Walking through the door they saw their Nanny standing in the living room, rubbing her eyes. “Welcome home.” She said, smiling to them. “I think I shall head back to bed, you have everything in hand here.” They watched the black, shorthair cat head back to her room, firmly shutting it behind her.
Behind them, Corin barreled through the door. “GUESS WHO'S HOME!” He announced loudly as he took the cubs from Kitty and danced around the room with them. Cass shut the door and dropped their bags, not interested in the least in putting them away. “What do you guys say to a picnic on the beach today?” Corin asked as he flopped down on the couch, a cub on each knee, ruffling their furry heads.
“OH YES! Can we, mom? Can we?” Kayley asked as she jumped to the floor, running back to her mother.
“I don’t know about that. We would have to pack the picnic basket. With chips and sandwiches and waters. And you would need to get your beach towels and water toys and the umbrella. Seems to be a lot of work to me.” Kitty said, sitting down in her favorite chair by the fireplace, it’s soft suede cushions surrounding her. The cubs took off down the hall to their rooms, laughing as they went. “Don’t you think we should have at least waited for tomorrow before going to the beach, Corin?”
“Psh, why wait? We could be called back in tomorrow. We need the break and time with the cubs. Leather skin here needs salt water before he wrinkles and dries out.” Corin motioned to Cass who sat down in his seat by the window.
“I agree with Corin about, ‘why wait,’ but I won't get wrinkled if we don't go.” Cass said as he glared at the husky.
“All right, all right, you win, but I’m not packing the basket. and I’m not packing the car either. You two can do it.” Kitty laughed as her cubs came back in the room, each dragging a towel behind them as they carried a bag with toys. Taking the towel from Kayley, she rolled it up and placed it in the bag and zipped it up. She did the same for the little Archer then placed the bags beside each other and lifted her cubs into her lap. “The boys are gonna pack the basket. We are gonna snuggle!” The three of them snuggled close in the overstuffed chair, fur and feathers smashed together as they hugged each other. Across the room the men looked at one another then shrugged and in unison said, “Fried chicken and paper plates?” After a moment of quiet the whole room erupted into laughter.
They all loaded up in the van parked in the garage. Bags of swimsuits and towels got throw in the back followed by a large umbrella and an empty picnic basket. Zhai backed out of the garage and away they went. They made a quick stop in town to fill their basket with fried chicken, rolls, and waters. Then the men went to get a few extra supplies at the general store, a surprise dessert and new snorkeling equipment, while Kitty and the cubs walked along the town’s main street to their favorite sweet shop. Everyone chose their favorite treat and got a tasty drink to enjoy on the drive.
The short trip to the beach was laid back and full of fun. The cubs talked about school and beating the nanny at their favorite game, Chutes and Ladders. Corin and Cass talked about the tide pools and how far they wanted to dive. Kitty’s heart grew warm as she thought of how perfect her little family was. In her the pocket of her jeans, the marble grew warm against her thigh. Absently, she rubbed the marble as if to reassure the warm orb. The trees melted away and became fields of flowers and hills of tall grasses that hid the view of the ocean as they drove. As they crested the top of a hill, the vast ocean of blue came into view. The waves churned on the sand, driftwood lined the beach, white washing the edge of the rocky shore, and a few trees cast shadows along the way. Zhai pulled into the parking area and positioned the car in the shadow of a tall redwood at the edge of the beach.
