Rathian has a single chin spike, while rathalos has three smaller spikes.

but dumbo here neglected to draw them in the second panel.

The little bit under the jaw near the cheeks is missing too. I don't think Rathian has that so that would've also been telling of who it was.

(what is it supposed to do anyways?)

Well, they both have them, they're just different shapes. Rathian's is more like a rounded, curved spike, while rathalos' is wider the further it gets from the jaw. It's purpose? To be a pain in the ass for Rae to draw, so we don't end up being drawn as prey so often XD!
