Actually, come to think of it, if this is the first advent of cannons in naval warfare in this setting, how would ships go about "sinking" each other before now? They aren't equipped with rams like Mediterranean triremes, and catapults and ballistae don't "seem" to be in use on naval vessels, as those pirates seem shocked to be encountering any kind of ranged weapon at all. Is the damage traditionally done with boarding parties and that's it?

I could also be completely completely overthinking it.

I would add, however, that Gorgon seems to be a little slow on the uptake. This may be this world's first instance of a true Q ship, but he still should've figured out by now that's no freighter.
