Endless Realms bestiary - Ferrovore
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
As part of coming up with creatures to populate subterranean caves and dungeons, I thought of the classic "creatures that screw with your gear" - the rust monster and aurumvorax - and wanted to come up with a similar creature for Endless Realms. I tried to imagine a creature that had evolved to sustain itself off eating minerals and metals, a kind of opportunistic scavenger adapted to processing these generally inedible substances that could be found anywhere from the city alleys to castles to caves to dungeons. I imagined it having super tough, bony "teeth" that are more tough, solid protrusions from its skull rather than breakable dental fixtures (although I was tempted to give it infinitely regenerating teeth, such as with many reptiles and sharks), highly corrosive saliva (and thus likely acid immunity), and an opportunistic, reptilian metabolism - it might gorge on a massive meal and be able to live off it for a number of months before it absolutely must feed again.
But anyway, yeah. This guy will eat your armour. And your weapons. And your treasure. He'd also probably be able to eat your house, too, if you gave him the chance...

Ferrovore teeth would make some hella deadly weapons.
How about a variant of these guys that biologically adapt to magic enhancements? Eat enchanted gear, gain that enchantment. Definitely a fun way to screw over a party of adventurers. In my mind though, I always see Ferrovores as non-lethal. Like, if one gives chase to you, it is only because it wants your gear, and it would eat the gear right off of you leaving your meat-parts untouched. Though a starving and aggressive ferrovore would probably have enough power behind it to rend the average adventurer apart to get at that tasty armor...

Some kind of ferrovore skull cestus would be kind of badass o_O
*chuckles* I'm not sure if they'd necessarily leave people alone - I could see it going either way! Either that they're so specialized to eat metal and minerals they'll leave fleshy things alone, or that they're so evolved to be opportunistic that they will actually eat just about anything.
