Chapter 26
“Not to brag or anything, but I know Lumiose City like the back of my hand,” announced Alexa in upbeat bravado. She made a gesture to a spire made of some kind of green stone. “Here’s the Vert Plaza and straight ahead, through the alleyway, will take us to the Centrico Plaza. The gym is in the tower in the dead center of our grandest city! You can see a bit of it between the roofs.”
“This place is huge!” muttered David in awe. For a city stacked with houses and shops everywhere, it still held a quaint charm to it. It was obviously a bustling and busy place, but the architecture spoke of a beauty of simpler times. A beauty which was made to last many lifetimes.
“Imagine all the pranks I could pull in a place like this!” exclaimed Brylie with eyes narrowed in glee.
“I’d rather not,” grumbled Flint with a glare down at the bunny.
“I feel so very small again,” muttered Casper as he fluttered closer to David.
“Giordan?” asked Ian while sticking very close to the Gourgeist’s side. “I remember this place.”
The floating gourd wrapped a gentle vine around the little squid. “I know. I do too.”
“What’s up you two?” asked David as he walked closer to the Pokémon hovering in the alley.
Alexa glanced over at him with an expression which suggested she was hot on the trail of something important. The notepad was out of her bag and in her hands in a flash.
“I’m going to guess it’s the same as myself,” growled Wenona while her wings accented her angry tone. “This is where we were hatched. I for one am not fond of being reminded of that stupid trainer who decided I wasn’t good enough for them.”
“Ah,” muttered David. “Well, if any of you would rather travel in your balls instead of walking around, then that’s fine with me. I don’t want you feeling uncomfortable with our surroundings. You could come back out after I leave Lumiose City.”
He was met with the death glare from Wenona. She settled for crossing her arms and turning her head away from him.
“I’m good,” muttered the Inkay while still floating close to Giordan.
“What’s up?” asked Alexa.
“Some of my Pokémon aren’t fond of this city,” commented David in gentleness. “This is where they hatched before being traded away to me. It seems that familiar surroundings have brought back some of those feelings of being abandoned.”
“Interesting,” muttered the reporter while scribbling furiously on her notepad. “Hmm, well it appears we’ve reached the Prism Tower, home of Kalos’s Electric-Type Gym. Say, what is up with this commotion?”
The woman led them out of the alley and into the shadow of a large white spire-like building. Several people were gathered around in a group and pointing upwards at the tower. A camera flashed from one of the spectators as David and his Pokémon followed Alexa.
“Clemont?” called the reporter as she reached a young teenage boy with blond hair and wearing a blue jumpsuit. Some sort of electronic-looking, light gray pack was situated on his back much like a backpack. He lowered his head and quickly turned to peer at them through thick glasses. Beside him stood a Luxio with ruffled head fur and a Magnemite floated near the cat.
“Alexa!” replied the boy. “I wasn’t expecting you back so soon. I hope your visit with your sister went well. Bonnie is currently at the preschool so I had the gym to myself, for once.”
“My visit went surprisingly well,” replied Alexa with a grin while she pushed David ahead of her. “Meet David. You’ll be surprised to know that he beat Viola without receiving any damage to any of his Pokémon whatsoever. Something I shall definitely be rubbing in for years to come.”
“Really,” said Clemont as he adjusted his glasses and eyed David and his entourage from head to foot. “He doesn’t seem like the type. I’ll take your word for it though.”
“David,” said Alexa brightly. “Meet the Lumiose City Gym Leader and Inventor Extraordinaire, Clemont.”
“Please,” muttered the boy while scratching the back of his neck. “I’m not that great. Most of my inventions don’t work anyways.”
“Are you kidding me?” asked Alexa with a snort. “You singlehandedly invented the Super Training and PSS functions for the Pokédex and PC systems! I’ve heard that Lanette from the Hoenn Region has allowed it to be expanded into her system, and I know Watson was thrilled to have your help in revolutionizing his Mauville City. Construction is set to finish in under half a year and he’s had the centerpiece for the city modelled after your gym as a dedication to you for your help!”
Clemont winced and shrugged.
“Proximity alert!” shouted a mechanical voice from beside the young gym leader. “Proximity alert! Initiating defense protocol!”
“Why heeeello!” exclaimed Flint and it was then that David realized the bird had left his head. “Aren’t you just the cutest thing ever?!”
The firebird landed on the floating orb with a content gleam in his eyes. The Magnemite’s single eye turned a bright glowing red.
“I could just sit on you all day!” continued Flint in blissful unawareness. “And polish you to perfection, and help with those screws, they look as lovely as fireworks by the way. You certainly are a rare treasure.”
“Oh boy,” grumbled Casper as the Butterfree landed on David’s shoulder. “Cue fireworks.”
“Flint!” started the boy.
“DEFENCES BREACHED!” screamed the floating ball with sparks shooting from its magnets. “DISCHARGE INITIATED!”
KA-BAZATTT! BOOM!
A wave of electricity flared off the Magnemite and hit all surrounding it. David felt his nerves light up as he was thrown off his feet. Wenona, Ian and Giordan each fell to the ground and Alexa and Clemont flinched, but seemed to be able to remain standing. Flint was a smoldering pile of feather under the still obviously enraged metal Pokémon.
“Threat neutralized, system recovery activated,” stated the Magnemite.
“Sorry about that,” gasped David. The remaining shock made him feel winded, like he’d been running for a long time now. “Flint likes anything that floats.”
“I knew he liked me,” croaked the bird before fainting.
“Here,” said Clemont as he held out a hand and helped David up. “Not used to being shocked I take it?”
“That was the first time,” said the older teen while taking inventory on his Pokémon. They all seemed fine. Wenona was obviously angry, but Flint seemed to be the one who got the worst of it. “I truly am sorry. I should have realized the bird would go after your Pokémon.”
“It’s not my Pokémon,” said Clemont quickly. “Neither is the Luxio. They belong to him.”
He pointed up at the tall white tower before them. David paused in his fumbled attempts to open his bag to stare upwards. He spotted a figure making its way down the side of the building. He was close enough to the ground for David to instantly be able to identify Max.
“I swear I’m not affiliated with him,” grumbled the Luxio while glaring away from the tower.
“What is that kid doing up there?” asked Alexa in alarm.
“He refused to take the elevator,” muttered Clemont while glancing down at the ground and adjusting his glasses. “He climbed up the exterior of the tower to battle me and then promptly dashed out the window before I could mention the stairs.”
“Whoa-WHAT- Whaaaa!”
The exclamation snapped David’s attention back up to the figure on the tower in time to see it slip off the side and fall into the foliage of a nearby tree. Several loud snapping sounds could be heard and the teen’s head emerged from the underside of the tree. Multiple leaves and a twig stuck out from his hair as he dangled upside down.
“Are you alright!” yelped Alexa while rushing to the tree.
Clemont and David hurried after her. David managed to pull out his Quick Ball and recall Flint into it as he passed the bird. He reached the tree as the branch the teen was dangling on snapped and Max landed on top of Clemont with a thud.
“Well, that was faster getting down than going up,” said Max while rolling off the gym leader. “You need to install some blooming stairs into your gym to make it easier for challengers to get to you.”
“It does,” gasped Clemont. “I tried to tell you that, but you were in so much of a hurry that you didn’t stay long enough for me to tell you.”
“You can’t prove a thi-Oh, David!” exclaimed Max while slamming a hand onto his free shoulder and causing the Butterfree on the other one to be knocked off. “Long time no see!”
“Indeed,” said David with a raised eyebrow. “Still climbing through windows I see.”
“Yup, absol-utely,” said the boy with a wide grin.
“Haha,” snorted David with a grin back.
“Is this the friend you were telling me about?” asked Alexa with her notepad clenched firmly in her hands.
“Yup, this is Max,” said David. “Max, this is Alexa.”
“Max. Nice to meet you,” said the boy while shaking her hand after she passed her pencil to her Helioptile.
“This trainer beat me in a battle of electric-types,” said Clemont. “It just so happens to be the first time I’ve lost to a fellow electric specialist.”
Alexa opened her mouth to begin questioning Max when all the lights on the Prism Tower dimmed and went out. The lights in the houses and buildings surrounding the Centrico Plaza also went dark. Silence covered the city as the electronic hum David hadn’t realized was there vanished completely.
“I didn’t do it!” exclaimed Max after a moment of startled silence.
“Something must have happened,” muttered Clemont while adjusting his glasses again. “Don’t worry, the power should kick back in soon. Meanwhile, I believe I owe someone the Voltage Badge. You ran off out the window before I could officially give it to you.”
“Oh, yeah,” he said while rubbing the back of his head and removing a leaf. “Ha, sorry! I was overly excited that I won.”
The gym leader removed a small box from one of his pockets. He opened it and withdrew a small object which looked like a pin of a crest-like shield with lightning bolts moving outwards from its center. Max raised his hand and Clemont dropped the pin into it. It reminded David of the bug-shaped one he got from Viola which was currently pinned to the strap of his bag.
“Hmmm,” mumbled the younger teen. “The power’s still not back. Something’s up. I need to check in with the Power Plants in the Lumiose Badlands. I’m sorry David, but battling me will have to wait. I suggest you head along Versant Road, through Camphrier Town and down Rivière Walk. You’ll reach a small cave which will take you to Cyllage City where you can challenge Grant, the Gym Leader of that city. This issue with the power should be fixed by the time you get back. I’ll look forward to battling you then.”
With that, the blond teen hurried away at what looked like it was supposed to be a run, but appeared more like an out-of-breath jog.
“So,” said Alexa while retrieving her pencil from her lizard Pokémon and all but pouncing on Max. “Young trainer! How does it feel after defeating Clemont at his own game and climbing the Prism Tower?”
“Magnemite,” muttered Max with wide eyes. He had his ball pointed at the Pokémon but seemed distracted by the woman’s question. “End process.”
“Systems shutting down,” droned the Pokémon as it disappeared in a flash of red light.
“Uh,” gulped Max with his eyes growing larger and eyebrows rising. “That sounds like a news reporter question.”
“That’s because Alexa is a reporter,” said David while tilting his head forward slightly and raising a single eyebrow.
“Kay-thx-bye!”
There wasn’t even dust left to float to the ground as he tore off deeper into the city; his Luxio all but left behind. The electric cat sighed while rolling its eyes. It grumbled inaudibly as it began plodding off after the boy.
“Well,” said Alexa looking slightly taken aback. “What was that about?”
“I really don’t know,” mumbled David.
“Hmmm,” muttered the reporter. “Another intriguing trainer to follow up on sometime.”
“Hey Alexa!” yelled a young girl as two teens almost the same age as David, if slightly younger, came hurrying towards them.
Both were wearing almost matching white uniforms which could have easily passed as a school uniform. The girl had slightly darker skin and dark purple hair while wearing a skirt and an orange bowtie and the boy had sandy blonde hair while wearing a blue bowtie.
“Ah,” exclaimed Alexa. “Sina and Dexio. Glad you could make it. This is David, the kid I was telling Professor Sycamore about. David, these are Professor Sycamore’s assistants.”
“We would have been here sooner,” said the boy, Dexio. “If it hadn’t been for some weird kid who just ran me over without a single word to say he was sorry!”
“David,” said Alexa. “I have to go to the Lumiose Press now and submit my stories and take care of some business. This is where I say good bye for now. Dexio and Sina will take you to Professor Sycamore’s lab.”
“Okay,” said David while waving as the reporter backed away. “Until next time!”
“Just follow us and we can have you at the lab in no time,” said Sina once Alexa had turned into an alleyway and was out of site.
“Alright,” agreed the boy. “But before I see Professor Sycamore, can I stop by a Pokémon Center first? I have a fire bird who needs healing … and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to put him in the box so I can train a different Pokémon.”

Talon's Rules
1. All Pokemon (with maybe the exception of your starter if you so wish) must have been obtained within a Wonder Trade upon starting the game.
2. You have six slots in your party. You must have three pokemon you can interchange per slot. Pokemon from the same group slot can never be in your party at the same time. Only one per group slot at a time. You will have a grand total of eighteen pokemon as part of your team.
3. If a Pokemon should faint, it is considered "DEAD" and must be either released or placed in the PC. Once all three pokemon from a group slot have fainted, you can only use five pokemon at a time.
4. No buying items (with the exception of the Poke Balls used to aid you in your Wonder Trade). All items are found in the region (or if you are super lucky, you may be able to rely on a pokemon whose ability is Pick Up as I have). Buying TMs in the Shop is the exception.

Personal Notes
This is currently the longest Chapter I have written for this series as there was a lot that had to go on. Most of my writing goes on what actions I feel make a complete chapter. I am thrilled with how this one turned out, and that picture is the perfect start to the sparking relationship between Flint and Max's Magnemite XD
