Steampunk was a bit of an experiment for me. I'd never seen the appeal before, but when I got art of steampunk Topaz, I started to think about the twilight of an era story and what that all means. Like the Samurai when the gun came out. What do you do when your conscience tells you to help someone, but doing so may end the world as you know it?
It's such a lovely era for crunchy plot-lines... the concept of Manifest Destiny alone offers up some major nastiness. Illuminating the noble savages... with cannons, if necessary. My mainstream steampunk novel delves into that concept. Unfortunately, steampunk has begin focusing more on the aesthetic than the 'punk.'
