different approaches work for different people.
if that's what works for you, then it is what it is.
i've never done anything like that. not sure that i could.

Masters of calligraphy paint out fully fleshed out figures with one brush stroke in only a matter of seconds. If they took more time they would loose that gesture, they would loose that sheer spontaneity of the brush, they would end up hiding the command they have over ink. You don't work in that material, or in that style, but you have that effect. And you have that ability. Perhaps not as honed and perfected, but you have gesture, and energy with every line. You don't need to spend hours on a piece to get the message out.

I think I would be devastated if your style changed to something more worked into, something less raw, in favor of something more polished.
