It's not so much the breathing part that's an issue for us as much as it's the increasing amount of pressure the deeper you go. We've been pretty deep-I think James Cameron went down in a sub and has the record of deepest dive but those subs cost a lot of money. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/.....s-science-sub/
Scuba divers have gone pretty deep, too. 1k feet is pretty impressive.

Until we develop stronger materials there's only so much exploration we can do. Despite the fact humans have been exploring the ocean for at least 130k years we've only discovered about 10% of it. There's a LOT we don't know about it.

Actually we've only explored about 5% of the moons surface and the area the Apollo 11 astronauts explored would fit into a football (soccer) field. There's still a lot left of it to find out about. The tech to explore both the moon and the oceans is tied together, too which is why it's frustrating that the Constellation program has had so many funding cuts.
It's frustrating to see so many people saying we should focus more on earth and less on space exploration, as if the discoveries we've made and technology we've developed for the space program hasn't had a beneficial effect on our efforts to take better care of our planet and each other. Grr.
