Here's the shading and basic lighting on the "air" elemental.
If you stick around for the credits, you'll note the music I used: "The Surface of the Sun" from the Sunshine soundtrack (a few people were curious about the music, I guess they didn't read the credits).

Since I was in high school I've been editing (so, nearly ten years). I went to college for it. The effects I use are done either in After Effects or Final Cut Pro. I can't really -tell- you how I did it. "You can't be told what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself." ;3
In this case it was Final Cut. I just used AE to import the .pict screencaptured as a sequence. I brought the rendered file into FCP and added a few effects to the end. The opening uses a simple scale up with motion blur turned on. The tail end (Matched to the sound effects in the music) uses the "Bad TV" filter, Glow, and scale effects, chopped apart into 5-10 frame segments to create a jerk feel.
