The Tail sleeves are not part of the uniform, they're just attached to them because making them a part of the flight outfit would make it too difficult to get in and out of it.
I figured that flight uniforms cover all parts of the body, there's no reason why the tail should remain uncovered. It does get very cold in high altitudes, and being covered up except for one part of your body is not going to bode that particular part very well.

Ah, so they're airmen or paras, then? Because if they're paras, the altitudes at which they flew were low in the scheme of things. So the temperatures weren't that low at altitude. Really the only people that'd benefit from a full-covering flight suit would be pilots of bombers, escort fighters, and interceptors. True high-altitude stuff.
You're spot on. Gordy (the cat) is a bombardier/nose gunner, Brinker (the wolf) is a flight engineer/dorsal gunner. In my setting, bombardiers are enlisted men.
Check out my page and check out my novella featuring Gordy before his days in the Air Force. The novel where the two will feature will be finished soon... sooner or later anyway! :D
