I think it uses 8 bit cause you can go positive 255 lifes before it goes negitive.

8-bit values have room for a total of 256 values. Unsigned goes from 0 to 255, then back to 0. Unsigned goes from -128 to 127, then back to -128 again. Trust me on that... I be a programmer :P

Sorry if I'm being a bit pedantic, but I find it a bit hard not to correct people on stuff I actually do know things about! >.> <.<

well no, after you get 254 positive lives the interger flips and goes to negitive 255 lifes. So you have to be careful not to get too many or you lose after your next death.

Well remember, once you go over a certain number, the lives counter starts displaying graphics other than numbers, like clouds and flags.

Do you recall your history? You can't get infinite lives in the original, you actually reset the counter and go back down to 1 life (negative lives actually) if you do it too much.
