This is a road stretch on rte US 85 N in South Dakota. I took this about two weeks ago while I was out there for a conference on Native Health and Policy. I am familiar with many open spaces as I have seen them in my home state of Arizona but never like this. This road had long stretches of nothing but the paved highway. There were long stretches with literally no settlements, no billboards, no gas stations, NOTHING. It was surreal to drive through land that was completely unpopulated like this. That being said, these drives were very long hours, I get tired just thinking about those long drives we did. The scenery definitely makes it worth the trip. It was wonderful to see the plains for the first time.
