Outside of Berlin, near a small village and the abandoned olympic village from 1936, there is a lonesome witness of the industrial age.
In the 1890s, industry were booming in Berlin, but the city was crowded and the train lines totally overloaded. The solution was a huge marshalling yard and maintenance station in the middle of nowhere, outside of Berlin. More than 1200 people were working here, and an own village for the railway workers were founded in 1919.
The water tower was the main landmark, with its impressive 56 meters he is visible even from far away. But all the roundhouses, tracks and halls were abandoned and overgrown now, after industry has no need for structures like that any more. It's easy to walk to the old tower, also the old roundhouse is open at many places... but with all the aggressive mosquitos and horse-flies there, you better keep your visit as short as possible.

Heh! It seems like a trade off, along with everything else. :) For example:
Ice patches that make you slip are a minus.
The lack of flies and, more importantly, mosquitoes? That counts as a giant plus.
The cockle-burrs don't care what season it is, they'll get on your clothes no matter what! ;)
Leaving tracks in the snow is one of my gripes with winter, I don't like showing that I've been there/leading others to come find me or the site. It also tends to drive how I photograph, so that I don't have disturbed snow in the frame... though that's probably a good thing that makes my photographs better.
